The last of the unimatic machines. This was a very attractive washer and dryer set, but only one speed. I am not sure if they continued making unimatic commercial machines other than the dry cleaning unit or not. In 1959 they had the multi matic machines which were two speed reversing motor. Personally, I like the unimatic unit much better and it is and was certainly more durable and dependable. Frigidaire had to step up to a two speed machine. Norge had a two speed machine in 1958. I think Frigidaire were one of the last to do this. Whirlpool/Kenmore had been doing it for a while then.

This is an interesting ad. The close up shots of the washer show an Imperial model, but they feature in the bottom left hand corner the Custom Imperial set.

Either way, GM does tout fabric flexibility "with one setting of the dials". They knew their days were numbered in the 1 speed marketing game.

Did anyone notice in the second picture the marketing department moved the lint-chaser ring up higher on the agitator column than it is suppose to be? I assume so you could see "lint-chaser".

My favorite of the unimatic-era Frigidaires. Love the console. Neighbors had one of these when I was growing up. It was the washer that began my years of severe Frigidaire envy in an all-Kenmore household.

Using the machine for dyeing

I remember my mom doing that. The ad notwithstanding, you had to boil the dye to get it to dissolve, and then add it to the wash water. It had to soak for a while, but it also needed to be agitated every few minutes so the dye would take evenly. And she did two empty loads afterwards to get the dye out of the machine.
