This must have been toward the end of Easy washers and dryers. I did have a machine much like this one. It washed quite well and had a stainless steel tub with aluminum agitator. I was just in my teen years and didn't know much about how this machine worked. When whatever engaged the motor to the mechanism broke, I just got rid of it instead of trying to find the reason and fix it. I'm sure it was something very simple, but washers were very plentiful and accessible back then at $5 a piece.

No, this is an Easy built machine. It was not till later on that Hotpoint rebadged some of their machines to say Easy on them. I am not sure why Easy quit building their own machines. Hotpoint also built rebadged "Penncrest" machines for JCPenny for quite a few years also.

I think

todays pic of the day also has a better idea. The ABC-Omatic washer. Gearless drive. Shampoo your laundry. Couldn't be any worse than todays cheezy top loaders.
A slightly taller impeller using a bit more water. The motors already reverse direction, and are variable speed, and variable stroke travel.
Use a flexible but very sturdy rubber motor coupler to absorb stress from heavier garments, and a beefy tub seal.
Did Hotpoint have a similar transmission like the Easy before they became identical to GE filter flos?
