POD 9-16 Whi'pool 'digital' [history quest]

A washer without knobs?  How futurizmick!

 

What year was this?  BD or DD?  How did it go over in the marketplace?  And in the repair shop?

1978 Whirlpool Imperial Mark 12 pair

This was a BD drive super capacity washer, It was the first electronically controlled American TL washer, We sold and worked on a lot of these, I had one customer that kept her LFA9800 till just a year ago till the washer became so mechanically tired that we replaced it with a used DD washer.

 

Their was a 24" wide BD version of this washer sold in Australia as well.

Thanks John.  So this machine did NOT need the main board replaced every 18 months? 

That would be interesting, considering after 40yrs time to get it right, it tends more to get <span style="text-decoration: underline;">worse</span>.

Family friend had one that was replaced in the mid 1980s due to a problem with the board.

I've seen this POD (lovely in mint, by the way) several times but never noticed the dryer has pushbuttons rather than a touchscreen like the washer. Wonder why they didn't take the leap with the dryer? Reminds me a bit of when Maytag's first 'one touch' washer (the 901, maybe?) appeared and the dryer matched to it still had a cycle dial.

The equivalent Kenmore model also had mechanical pushbuttons on the dryer.

For the new members among us

May somebody "in the know" repeat what color that picture actually is? I seem to recall an explanation when it first entered Pict of Day circulation that something about the HTML coding renders it that blue color we are seeing.

A high school I visited in 1982 had that washer in gold in the Home Economics room. A year later, I began carpooling to school with children of a distant acquaintance of my Grandfather. Moving through the basement to the garage first morning, I saw that they owned this washer with Kenmore's version of the dryer (all pushbuttons). So, that's two that made it past the decade mark.

I don’t have the Whirlpool washer and dryer in the POD but I do have a Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII set from 1963. All the temperatures and wash times are preset, and all you do is turn the timer until it stops on the cycle number you selected, push the timer knob in to start and that’s all there is to it.

The magazine ad had the machines in gold and maybe a version in almond.  There are some on eBay.

It was altered/"photoshopped" for the POD, I don't think anything to do with HTML coding.
