From what year is this model? I notice it has a manual-clean lint filter. Kenmore debuted a self-cleaning filter with the '58 Lady K., and I'm assuming this Whirlpool is newer than that. Was it a case of Kenmore getting the hot new features a year or two before the Whirlpool line was allowed the same?
I seem to be focused on detergent dispensers lately, LOL. Question: Where is the detergent dispenser touted in the ad? Do you remove the lint filter and pour it in there? I'm assuming the dispensers on the left side are timed bleach/fabric softener.
At any rate, a nice looking console and I do love the sound of a Surgilator at work. The sound of my '17 SQ is reminiscent of that.

Hi Eugene, Yes WP did not get the Self-Cleaning lint filter till the 1964 mark 12 model.
The brush type lint filter doubled as a detergent dispenser, you could pour liquid or powered detergent in as you started the washer and it would be diluted and added as agitation started.

Family had an LJA-32 (2 cycle/2 speed, H/W, W/W, C/C, three levels, full porcelain cabinet) through June of 1976. Had many repairs including bearings replaced twice. Local dealer advised not to put (powder) detergent into the dispenser for build-up eventually clogging the feed hose.
Thanks for the information, guys. I guess that's why Whirlpool called it a 'Magic Mix' filter. I knew several people with Whirlpools but none of them took advantage of the feature.
In fact, it was only recently--after reading some Maytag user manuals--that I learned they suggested putting detergent in the agitator to act as a dispersing device, ala Frigidaire. Everyone I knew with a Maytag put detergent in the tub.

a 1960 model of WP mark XII, cool as hell, it's time to put it back in my line-up. And yes, the detergent mixing inside the brush filter, though a plastic window, is FUN!!!

When growing up, IIRC it was first washer Mother Dear had, and was bought when moved into the new house.
Don't recall Mama ever putting powdered detergent in dispenser, but like almost every other housewife one knew, detergent went in bottom of tub as washer as fillng, then laundry added.
Cleaning that brush filter was a royal pain. My WP portable/convertible (a later model) had bed of nails lint filter which was a decided improvement. One could whack on solid surface and that took care of lint.
Would imagine that Magic Mix filter wasn't so bad when powdered detergents were phosphate laden. But once things moved over to Zeolites and heavy amounts of washing soda can see where problems would start.

Bed of nails WP lint trap-I just let the stuff dry and sucked it out with one of my vacuums.The hit method works of course,too.You can whack the filter into a trash can.

I clean the FD 1-18s filter by slapping it in the laundry sink so the lint will just wash down the drain so it will go where it will do the most good.

I have a septic tank-don't want the lint going there.Drather it go to the trash in my case.Would love to have one of those bed of nail washers again-but stuck with a one of those VMW things.HATE IT!!
My Mom had a 62” MOL Whirlpool with the Magic Mix filter. Sometimes we did put the detergent in the filter, and sometimes just poured on the clothes after it was loaded and was filling with water. It was located in the kitchen right next to the kitchen sink.
We used a dinner fork or a hair comb to clean the lint out of the filter. And it was almost impossible to get it completely clean, even running it under the faucet, there was always some lint stuck up near the top of the bristles. BTW, this was an excellent washer, very dependable.

Yes, we used a hair-comb to clean the brush filter.
The filter housing wasn't large enough to hold the 1-1/4 to 2 cups of powder detergent that was the stated dosage in those days, plus jam the filter back in ... although the city water supply was quite soft so we couldn't use that much without having a Bobby Brady scenario.
Rex were you able to get a new agitator for the vmw ?
No-all of the swap shops are closed.Those were the best places to get agitators.So for now stuck with the DA "tangle wrap" agitator that came with the machine.The swap shops had agitator bins you could look thru.And there went my sources for VINTAGE machines! Would like to get older machines if I can.
