At the very end, under special features for the model 66490 (all push button plus dial) it lists 'water refiner'.....what is this feature?

I was going to ask the same thing!

Is the external water unit that box on the wall above the washer control panel?  That is a pretty cool feature.  I am surprised that isn't done in some high end front loaders today - similar to the water softener in my Miele dishwasher.
