So is it promoting Maytag or Western Union? (I know, I should read the ad some more)

Like the pic of Maytag's chairman, Fred II, as well as "the washing machine inspector" in the background...

(Hey, Buddy, you better be sure those washers work!) LOL

As conservative as Maytag management was, I can't see them using Western Union for anything other than the most urgent of communications.

As soon as I saw this, with the young guy in the back, I thought of our Ben of Iowa.
 
I wonder if the 140 Maytag's in the photo were part of the 10 million anniversary production run, sometime in the fall of 1956. Very cool ad.

While we know Maytag to be a conservative company, they sure did celebrate milestones by spending big money on dinners and ceremonies! I have a book from the 1949 dinner where, if I recall correctly, the 3rd millionth Maytag was celebrated.
