Liquid chlorine bleach always came in brown glass bottles to prevent light from breaking it down, sorta like beer.
We used Salvo (is that like Salve Regina?) and Vim also. 2 Slavo, as we called it, or 3 Vim were recommended for a full load, but mom usually broke a Slavo tablet in half when we had our WH fl.

You are right! Bleach used to come in those brown glass jugs. I had forgotten about those! When were they last used? About 1962 or so?

I miss Salvo. One of the best smelling detergents ever. Good cleaning too.
My mom used Salvo for a while, usually breaking the tablet in two for our 1965 FL Westinghouse. Sometimes they would crumble instead of breaking cleanly. Still remember the pleasant smell. I believe she then started using Wisk in it for a short time before getting the Maytag in '73.

Used Salvo in our V-12 GE.
She put them in the Filter Flow Pan and they never dissolved At the end of the final spin, there would be a chunk left in the Filter Flo pan or stuck to the clothes. Did she re-rinse them ? NO. Hmmmmmmmmmm... Maybe that would explain the rash everyone had until she stopped using them, LOL

That was one of the sad ironies of WISK tablets. Just as the push began for HE machines, WISK tablets, which were a fine, low sudsing product, could not be used in dispensers, nor could they go into the drum because the minimal amounts of water used could not guarantee that the tablets would dissolve. So you paid for tablets that had to be mushed up in order to go into the dispenser of the machine. I did crumble those tablets though for just as long as I could buy them and was sad when WISK gave up on a non-liquid detergent.
