That 55 Pulsamatic is the washer we had until I was 4,it finally died after washing all my diapers..LOL, It was replaced by a Frigidaire WCDAN Custom Deluxe in 1969 which lasted 17 years.
I have that same washer in storage back in PA. I don't have the matching dryer, but I do have the Imperial model. I hope to get everything here by summer.
It agitated so fast it was almost a blur, and it tied everything in a knot...LOL But my Grandmother, who bought it new to replace her 1939 Apex wringer LOVED it,she always said it was the best washer she ever used, it came from W E Shaw Furniture in Lenoir NC, they are still in business.
I think so...it agitated at twice the speed, I think 660 times a minute, but used a much shorter stroke, I think less than an inch, it spun 660 rpm I believe. What I remember most was how fast the water was slung out of the tub...as a 4 year old I could never figure out where it all went..LOL
I never knew such a mechanical design existed. Robert had one at the 2001 Wash-In. When it started pulsating, to me it sounded like a machine gun. Everyone can attest that was there I laughed so hard and so loud, my laugh reverberated all the way from the basement up to Roberts 2nd floor.
The very first Frigidaire washing machine I ever saw operate was a 1957 control tower pulsamatic. A neighbor that lived down the street put in a load of clothes and asked me if I wanted to watch it work, which of course I did. I think she noticed my interest in washers and dryers. I couldn't have been more than about 8 at the time, but it made a lasting impression on me. Until much later in life, I wasn't positive if I had really seen it agitate so rapidly or not, since all I had ever run across were machines that agitated much slower. I didn't know about all the different transmissions that Frigidaire had through the years then.
I was confused by the advertisements Frigidaire had thru the years! Remembering hearing and seeing no belts, no gears and no pulleys during the mid-1960s. I was wondering how was that possible. Preliminary research showed the unimatic transmission and being direct drive. Then my mom buys a 1-18 in 1971, having the roller matic but it has a belt. Fast forward to 2011 and learning of this site and learning the details and evolution of Frigidaire washers and other appliances! I learned that the advertising differs with the model year.
