I was at the grocery store the other day (Hy-Vee) and at the last minute I remembered that I was getting low on laundry detergent. I bought a bottle of Wisk HE, because I was short on cash instead of Tide HE. I haven't used the Wisk yet, still have a little Tide to finish off first. But the one thing I noticed is there were more liquid detergents than powder detergents. The only powder detergents were Tide and Gain. I'm wondering if it's a store thing, or are powder detergents becoming a thing of the past.

Has anyone used the Cold Water Tide in a front loading machine? I wash most everything in cold water except for whites and sheets, and I have been thinking of trying the Cold Water Tide. I remember back in the 70's the only detergent that I friend of mine would use was Cold Power.

I've used regular Tide HE powder, as well as Kirkland HE powder, in my FL with cold water for permanent press items that were lightly soiled (perm press shirts and slacks that were worn only once at work). Excellent results.

I didn't even bother to read the package to see if these detergents are recommended for cold water use, I just did it. Knowing that they make less suds in cold water, I added a bit more detergent than I would do in warm or hot water.

I should add I am in Southern California where the cold water line in summer feels almost tepid...in winter, it would be icy cold and I would use warm water since my FL does not have automatic temperature control.

Some FLs with Auto Temp control will mix in some warm water on a cold water wash if the cold water line temperature is too low. Other Auto Temps control only warm water washes by mixing cold and hot water intake to the precise required temperature.

Some of the Frigidaire Affinity models appear to have two cold options: Auto Temp cold (which presumably adds warm water if the line is too cold) and regular cold which just takes in cold water line water no matter what the temperature.

I used Tide Cold Water powder exclusively for about a year, with great results. I always added liquid chlorine bleach on loads of highly-stained kitchen whites and they always emerged clean. I used the controlled-temp cold water setting on my washer, as cold water is very cold up here in Minnesota.

The new liquid version, labeled Tide Cold Water X2, was very highly-rated in the last detergent test by Consumer Reports---much higher than either the powder or liquid in the original version.

Although Tide CW isn't an HE detergent, I use it in my Frigidaire front-loader and it does a great job. Give it a try!

Gave away my totally full box of TCW as the scent just was way too overpowering, even on dry laundry. Suppose that had something to do with the fact most if not all laundry is line dried, perhaps using a tumble dryer would have forced some of the scent out.

Persil cleans quite well at 85F in the Miele, as do several other detergents in my stash. Indeed Consumer Reports stated at the time Tide With Bleach cleaned as well or better than TCW.

we only use powders so that limits what we can get from the local grocery stores around here. Typically the grocery store only has Tide HE. I can get Charlie's Soap at a local Health Food store and I get Persil from my vacuum shop (don't ask me why that is, but they have it).

I wish Gain or some other detergent company would come out with a new HE powder detergent. My biggest wish in the detergent world is that we could get Ariel Baja Espuma (their HE version) here in the States, I can find it anywhere.

Gain did have a HE powder version - though never saw it here in Connecticut. Now most of the powders have disappeared from our grocery store shelves. Stop & Shop carries only a few boxes of Tide and Arm & Hammer and perhaps some small boxes of Cheer. That's all.

Shaws carries a few more variations of Tide powder, some A&H, and Bold powder.

Interesting - all the remaining powders are on the bottom shelf kind of looking abandoned.

If one wants any of the Gain powders, one needs to go to the Dollar store or sometimes WalMart or Target will have a few enormous boxes.

I will just continue to stock up on Colgate Fab powder (Rain Forest scent only) at every Family Dollar Store in my area....

I MISS THE OLD "COLD POWER" FROM COLGATE/PALMOLIVE!! I USE TO USE THAT IN THE 80'S WHEN I WAS AT EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY!

I use TCW frequently in my LG, especially for the pre-wash portions of cycles. Works great, but creates enough suds that I would never try it in the Sanitary high heat cycle. As usual I use much less than is recommended. Is there a powder version of TCW? If so, it isn't available in our area (Connecticut).

COLD WATER TIDE

I'm not 100% positive, so please don't quote me, but I think the Cold Water Tide comes in both liquid and powder. My Frigidaire has auto temperature for all temperature settings except for hot, which is good because the cold water in the winter time here in Iowa can be quite chilly. One of my favorite powder detergents is Arm and Hammer, which is what I used when I had my Whirlpool apartment size TL and was always happy with it. Arm and Hammer does have a HE liquid, but no one sells it around here. I did notice that Dollar General is now selling the Tide HE for $10.00 a bottle, but I don't remember what size the bottle was. I was at another grocery store, and saw that Clorox has a HE bleach, what's next HE fabric softeners.

Too Many Tides!

Tide CW does come in both liquid and powder formulas.

I am still reading on the website that quite a few people are really pissed, disgruntled, and downright ANGRY with Tide 2X liquid. Some swear to never use Tide again, and are going to other P&G brands like Gain and Cheer.

Has anybody used Era in awhile?

The Oxydol powder is SUPER!! I have'nt tried the liquid form. Give the powder a whirl and see what you think. Let me know.

Oxydol Powder

When I finish the bottle of Wisk HE, I will get a box of Oxydol powder. I'm sure I will have to reduce the amount of detergent used for use in a HE washer.
