Someone I know here in Cincinnati is selling what appears to be a pre WWII GE double-door refrigerator. It looks like my 1939 SO2 unit, but bigger and in good condition. In fact, it's still in use. It's set into an alcove in its kitchen. The owner doesn't know how much it's worth, but is open to offers. He'd like to see it preserved. If need be, I can store it at my home until someone can get it.

Please send me a message if you're interested or have any ideas.
Dave

An absolutely stellar design--and cosmetically really beautiful from what I can see. Wouldn't want to try getting it outta that niche in the wall by myself, though…that thing's gotta weigh at least 700lbs...

Beautiful

and heavy, no doubt. I've never seen one of these old double door GE's. Someone will love getting this one..after they hire some Olympian weightlifters to move it. :-) Ok, it might take just a powered dolly?

The want is strong with this one...

Resisting...the urge...to get it! Gah! This is one of my bucket list fridges to collect. It essentially has a CK3 unit underneath but it has the fan forced condenser coils as one of the pictures points out. One of the first to have that actually. This unit could be either R12 or SO2. It all depends on when it was made. My guess is SO2 as only a handful of these old scotch yoke compressors got filled with R12. These are very strong units. Almost nothing to do except defrost it regularly, watch the door seals, clean the condenser coil, and oil the fan motors. I love the alcove that it is in. So cute. I bet it weighs every bit of 600 pounds. Look at all of that modern big fridge space though!

That has your name all over it.

I have to go to Dayton sometime to get the tiny Westinghouse.

I don't think your tacoma is rated for this!

Seriously, check the owners manual. Maybe it will tell you if you can transport this monster. It may tell you something more useful than, "do not drink contents of battery".

That fridge isn't that bad.  The bigger issue is to carefully handle it to avoid damage to it's luscious porcelain coating.

I sent a message to Wes on your behalf.  The baby Westy lives there also!

Knowing Travis...

Is like knowing the baker when you are overweight. He has already messaged a guy named Wes on my behalf. I may just end up getting this bucket list fridge of mine. That is of course, unless somebody on here wants it more! If I do get it I want it to be in an alcove just like the one that currently fits it so snugly! It is just too cute!

The original poster is Dave.  I goofed, his former roommate is Wes.

This is likely a 1939 or 1940 model.  These were likely in the finer homes of the day.  It looks like it could be 12 cu ft which is large for the period.

I have made an offer on Ray's behalf.  It might end up being a giant Christmas present.

I've always admired Dave's enthusiasm and determination and look forward to meeting another great member of the site.  Ray is correct. I am NOT a good influence when it comes to controlling your collection.

Dave, Sorry about that!

You are the kind soul who Travis has been talking with. If this deal works out and you end up moving and storing this behemoth for me I will be eternally thankful!

Travis, thank you for setting this up for me. I wouldn't have went for it but this is also why I don't have a garage full of refrigerators...yet.

It's a slippery slope.

If you doubt that, look at my basements (yes, that's plural) and garage. I've got a few washers.

I also have a 1950 Frigidaire refrigerator which needs a relay and some paint & a 1954 GE upright freezer which could use a door gasket, wiring, & paint. It does have its door keys and is functional. The Frigidaire & GE may be available.
