OK, time to ask for a little more help!

The wrought iron fence is in need of cleaning and painting. The beginning of this project involves some rust removal... yards and yards of it! We were thinking of buying a sandblaster and large compressor for the job, but it was suggested that a pressure washer might do it. This would be preferable to having to clean up all that sand at the end!

I know a strong enough one will blow a hole in pressure-treated decking or the skin of a car door, but what about rust on wrought iron? Blowes has a Troy-Built 2550psi, 2.3GPM w/ a 1890cc Briggs and Stratton engine for $279 through tomorrow.

So who's got the skinny on pressure washers and what they'll do?

Thanks,
Chuck

How is it going guys,
I don't think a pressure washer is going to do very much for rust. It will aid in the removal of loose paint but I don't think it will do anything on the rust removal. Nothing like a wire brush to do the trick. Now with that thought maybe a wire wheel that you can put on an electric drill to speed the process. With you and Rich out there should be able to get 2 going and you would be done in a day or so. No clean up either. The sandblaster sounds good but like you said a lot of clean up after. Hope your enjoying your Memorial Day weekend.

Furthermore--

why buy when you can rent?

I think for very specialized equipment it is better to rent first and then buy. However, that's just me.

Good luck on it no mater what you decide!

I did a wrought iron fence once and I used a blow torch on it
to burn the old paint and stuff off of it.
It worked great.
Afterwords I used Rust-o-leum High Gloss on it and its
lasted for years.

Just my 2 cents worth.......

Butch...maybe you should have your own show...hey they give one to any other idiot out there...who doesn't even have a clue what their talking about....

Maybe with you sliding down a big fire house pole for an introduction....

I could be your sideick.....

we could have topics like:

What to do with those darn ole holiday leftovers

ashtrays...the new fire pits

grooming your bear

and how to decorate rich, rich, rich,...when you're not, not, not!!!...........lol

laugh now, and in a few weeks your gonna see a new show on HGTV with these topics....and the host making millions giving away new washers and dryers to all the guest in the audience...

Wire Brush

Wire brush on a drill works great, but use heavy eye protection. Those pieces off that brush can and will come out.For paint removal use automotive paint remover,it works wonders.I used it on the 48 and its wonderful. Also buy some leather gloves at lowes they come in packs of 3.So you wont chip your nail-polish. Good Luck Bobby
