Preway was based in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, and went out of business in the early 1980's.  They also produced a dishwasher with a built-in gas burner to heat the water, and they also did fireplaces, and fireplace inserts.  Rich "Sudsmaster" has a Preway fireplace insert, but I don't know if it is still installed.  I have also seen Preway camping stoves that are almost a clone of Coleman stoves.

The problem wasn't with the blower, it was adjacent sheet metal that was rattling quite a bit.

As I recall I successfully addressed it with some simple cushioning as well as bending some internal thing sheet metal by hand into a position where it wouldn't contact the fan housing.

I just checked it - the fan is acceptably quiet now.

In fact thank you. The mention of it made me fire it up again, as it was unseasonably rainy and cold last night. I confirmed that the fan is much quieter than before. It did a good job of warming the study and adjacent rooms.

Over the winter I tried placing thin (1") fire bricks on the floor of the insert, but with the grate it seemed to raise the fire too high. This time I cleaned out the ashes and removed the fire bricks, and let the cast iron grating set on the thick steel floor. Seemed to work fine. I think the grating will keep the highest heat off the steel floor, esp if I let a layer of ash cover the floor. And the original parts drawing shows a similar grating with no fire bricks.

The blower fan motor seems to be in very good condition. I did lube it up with SAE 20 a couple of months ago, as well as clean and lube the brass bushings at either end of the squirrel cages.
