I have not seen Purex Bleach here in Ft Worth in quite a while . Don't Know what has happened to it.. I loved the old Final Touch too, it did have a blueing in it and made the whites glisten. Have you tried Sauvitel yet? smells great too, A bit like the F.T. As far as the "New and Improved " Final Touch for what it is worth POOEY, POOEY POOEY,,,,

washerboy that ain't purex, its purox. LOL

I dont remember seeing it around here for a long time either, I had to chuckle my Grandmother, could always twist up words to her purex was a cross between purex and clorox, she called it purox..sure do miss her.She also washed dishes in the zinc. never a sink, your post made me think of her thanks. alr2903

My Grandmother always used Purex. As a matter of fact she still calls all bleach by the name Purex. I have not seen the product lately either.

We have Purex....but it is a Purex "2 for Colors" liquid.

I'm still undecided about the liquid bleaches for colors.

I'm not entirely sure they are really necessary.

I've actually been using the Final Touch softener a lot lately. It doesn't whiten whites like the old formulation, but it's not that bad.

Picked up some "Snuggle Orange" tonight.

THAT should be interesting.....

Purex liquid chlorine bleach has been discontinued

At one time, this was my favorite bleach, too. I went to the Dial Corp. website to inquire about it and found nothing. As far as I know, the only products they still manufacture bearing the Purex name are detergents and fabric softeners. Final Touch was my fabric softener of choice in the 70's. I really liked the smell but never tried the new version. By then, I had moved on to Snuggle. For some reason, I tend to NOT ALWAYS reach for the leading products. For example, while a lot of people were buying Clorox and Downey, I preferred Purex bleach and Final Touch.

Chlorine bleach is a really low-margin business...there was a FTC lawsuit in the 60s when P&G tried to buy Clorox...essentially the FTC found that as part of the Sherman Antitrust Act that P&G and Clorox were too dominant in the "laundry room" and that it would tend to scare off competition.

That said, Dial/Purex probably sold the plants off to local producers and kept the brand name for other purposes. Clorox is really the only national brand of chlorine bleach (interestingly, in Canada the big national brand is Javex which is a Colgate-Palmolive brand. They also have "Fleecy" fabric softener up there)

Purex Bleach

I live in Little Rock and have not seen Purex in years..there is the old standard Clorox of course in every scent possible as well as the new All brand and the "off" brands. My mother always used Clorox. I certainly do remember the old Final Touch. That was another staple for my mother. The dark blue bottle with the white cap for measuring. I believe it had bluing in it for whiter whites. The scent was great also.

Hey: Thanks for all your input guess I need to hang up looking for purex bleach. Dixieland from Memphis reminded me about my grandmother (who lived in Benton County...bout 150 miles east of Memphis)...she could'nt say the word purex she called it pew-rex...they had such bad water that everything got scrubed with "pew-rex"...she also soaked her dentures in a pew-rex bath every night. Thanks for all the replys..it is great fun reading them./m:)

The chemical composition of "off" or store brand chlorine bleach is the same. They all disinfect, sanitize, and deodorize.

Cleanfresh - That is not entirely accurate. Some of the scented and designer bleaches are not approved for disinfecting and are not the same composition as true, original formula Clorox bleach. Clorox is the only household bleach manufacurer that adjusts it's formula on a regional basis to perform optimally in different water compositions - softer, harder, mineral content, etc. are all taken into account in the formulations so that consistent results are attained.

I didn't mean that the results needed to be corrected based on factory locations, just that Clorox actually formulates the product to perform best in the water conditions that exist in different areas. I.E. the forumla of Clorox orginal bleach in Florida may not be exactly the same as some made across the country in Idaho.

Clorox

In Checking by last bottle I find is says "Mfg For "Clorox this means some one else in makeing it for them in this area. Does any one have a bottle that say s made by Clorox?

Dial discontinued Purex liquid bleach some years ago. Purex bleach was never a big east coast brand. Once in a while you could find it in WalMart and for some reason in the one now defunct Pathmark supermarket in my area. Mostly what you found on our store shelves was Clorox or individual store brands. I thought I remembered that a few years back, P&G test marketed "Comet" liquid bleach - guess it didn't do too well since it never got to the Northeast.

Before the Dial acquisition, Purex also made and distributed liquid chlorine bleach under the "Fleecy White" brand - just happened to find that in an old Purex annual report from 1970.

I also miss the Purex "Vano" liquid starch. It was very concentrated and had a great fragrance. But also was a regional brand for the West. I used to ship a case or two of it home whenever I visited LA. But when Dial also acquired AE Staley - makers of Sta-Puf softener and Sta-Flo starch, the Vano name was eliminated and consolidated with the Sta Flo brand. Don't much like the Sta Flo brand though - not as concentrated. So now I have found Faultless liquid starch at KMart. Works almost as well as Vano. Of course, now that is unavailable also. If I want it I must order it on line at three times the price per unit plus shipping. What I don't understand though is that other spray starch products made by Faultless are available in all my local markets - but every single one tells me the Faultless liquid is not available to them.

So let's add this to the long list of things that are no longer available that I used regularly:

- Rinso Detergent (made by Lever Brothers)
- Fab and Ajax powders (the real one)
- Lux and Lifebuoy (the regular Lifebuoy - not the bars that the Vermont Country Store sells that are half the size and three times the price)
- Purex Bleach
- Vano Starch
- Prell concentrate shampoo
- Wisk Powder
- Coast Soap (the yellow flavor)
- Dash detergent
- Rose lotion Vel dish liquid
- Dishwasher All
- Jubilee Kitchen Wax

We have Linit starch here in the Stop and Shop.

The Vel pink dish detergent is still sold in Puerto Rico.

You can get the Vel white body bars (similar to Dove) at drugstore.com or in stores in the Lancaster, PA area (I think it's popular in hard water areas)...

All powder (the most recent incarnation) can still be found in Walgreens, but I see it nowhere else.

I also can't find the Cheer "Free" powder anywhere....
