Well the fall weather has rolled in.

I have roasted a chicken and some potates for a dinner guest.

This is the best time(the oven is still hot) to doa pyrolytic self-clean of the oven cavity!

Dool-lock lever flipped,
Button pushed
Timer set

2:00 for light soil
3:00 for medium soil
4:00 for "OMG who used the oven as a toilet? LOL

Oven racks in dishwasher, as the chorme will come off during the 900*F to 1,000*F incineration.

* Kids (as applicable) locked in the back of the house. Parts of the cabinet become dangerously hot.

* Unwanted gold jewelry pawned in anticipation of electric bill. That's a zaggeration, it's actually cheaper than a can of the spray stuff. But do save it for weather when the heat is running, not the air.

* Might open a window. Might open two.

I've been pyrolyzing for decades. You know those brass screens in the bottom of recreational herb pipes? Just last week, zamatterafack.

The summer weather has rolled in here in the UK! 30c for the last 4 days where I am - bizarre for October!

USING THE SC CYCLE ON THE OVEN

Hi Steve yes I almost always start the SCC when the oven is still hot and in weather is cool. But I have always left the racks in, it does not remove the plating but mearly discolors it. But I prefer clean racks and when guests come to visit they have never looked inside my ovens and shirked horror that I have discolored racks LOL. I actually think they look better as they are similar to the color of the oven now, GE has even gone to porcelain oven racks in there better ovens now that look like my old discolored racks.

Drip Bowls

I remember as a kid in Orlando FL it was a twice a year "event " fall and spring to self clean the lower over in the Frigidaire twin 30 in Harvest Gold. The surface unit drip bowls were porcelain and cleaned great in the oven

Electrolux does not want you to leave the racks in, the oven won't self clean with them in.    My last two ovens were SC, and after I left the racks in a few times I decided it was better with them out unless they got really cruddy.  The chrome finish seemed to thin and go away over time.

A Beautiful Sight

Why wait, its cheap, safe and heats the house no more than making a pot roast.  Clean is my favorite color so in go burner pans, waffle grids, baking sheets, pyroceram, cast iron, alumunim etc etc etc.  You don't need to wait until you can only bake one cupcake at a time to run the cleaning cycle.

Heat-------

and if it is a chilly fall day, (43F, raining) and the furnace pilot is out (again,) the heat is most welcome.

Toggle, how do you get the oven racks into the dishwasher? Do you take out the top rack?

We always left the racks in our GE P-7 oven and threw the drip bowls in for good measure.  True they did discolor, but they were clean.

My Maytag, since it's a smooth top doesn't have drip bowls, but I have left the racks in before, and again they do discolor.  So now I have 1/2 the set shiny and the other half dull.  This model has four racks because it's a convection oven.

As for the heat, I like a cool day when I can leave the window and door open.  Smoke was never that much of a problem with either the GE or the Maytag as their smoke eliminators worked pretty well.  Only problem sometimes is the smell, you get a very catalytic smell if you have a very dirty oven.

One thing I enjoy, the GE you had to pull up a window shade, on the Maytag you can watch the sparks and flames through the window.

Has anyone had the problem with the oven discoloring where a sugary item spills over?  I had a pie boil over and the sugary mess cooked on.  When I ran the clean cycle the oven liner discolored leaving a white ring where the spot was.  I was hoping after a few cycles it would disappear--it didn't

It's getting near the time for us to clean the oven once more.
We can only do it when it's at least 40F outside. The doors and windows have to be open to disperse excess heat.

That last time we used it the microwave over the oven almost melted and the kitchen temp rose to over 90F with the windows and doors open. The adjacent cabinets were so hot you couldn't touch them. After 45 minutes we cancelled the self clean program as we didn't want to burn the house down. The self clean cycle had another hour to run. But when it cooled down the inside of the oven was perfectly clean.

Cleaning the oven in my Bosch gas range today and in the prompts it asks if I removed the racks. I had to answer the questions or it would not proceed into the cycle. It is selective for time at 3,4,5 hours. I chose 3 hours and hit start. The aroma in the house is a bit much but I do have all the windows open. I clean the oven this time of year since its not too cold or too warm out...just right.

My wife use to love when it was time to SC the oven. She is always cold. Here in sunny hot FL she still sits with the afgan wrapped around her. The last two GE Profile ranges we bought have the porcelain coated oven racks so you can selfclean them with discoloring. I have not had to clean me new one here yet so not sure how hot the house will get. The new house has the open floor plan and over 12 foot high ceilings so don't think it will be too bad.

Burning Up

I have cleaned GE and Hotpoint, Frigidaire both old and new, Tappan, Maytag, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Thermador, Dacor and Magic Chef.  Gas is a tad hotter and doesn't win awards in cleaning compared to electric.  No self cleaning oven past or present can compare to the GM oven for full and even cleaning..  I have cleaned ranges around the calendar year and pay no attention to weather.  If your range is creating that much heat it would also suggest it is inefficient in providing heat for baking as well.  While I am not a fan of gas as a cooking medium in all fairness I have cleaned gas ranges that don't throw that much heat.

Allen it sounds like you have a gas SCO if it almost melted the MW, LOL

Yes, it's a three year old Maytag gas convection oven.

I've never seen an oven get this hot during a cleaning cycle. I think something may be wrong with it. While baking normally, the oven exterior doesn't get all that hot. But when in self clean mode, the plastic on the stove display gets soft and sticky after about 30 minutes of self clean. The exhaust for the self clean is a slot right under the electronic control panel. It exhausts the air straight out into the room. And that's using the "Low" dirt setting. There are also Medium and Heavy settings to choose from. I think if I chose "heavy" it would act like Ms. O'Leary's cow!

I think if there were any liquids in the adjacent cabinets they'd start to boil in their bottles this thing gets so hot. But the one time we ran it for 30 minutes the oven was perfectly clean allowing for a few particles of dust that were left over. We don't really get the oven that dirty in the first place though.

Our last self clean was a GE P7. We loved that oven. It cleaned like something else and let the owner control how long the self clean cycle ran for and the exterior doors just only got warm during a cleaning cycle.

Looks like it's fall cleaning time for many of our ranges. I'm in line to self-clean both my gas and electric Frigidaire (2002) ranges. The gas range throws an immense amount of heat. The other room on the same floor as the kitchen is the living room (I use it as a dining room). A door can be closed to both the lower level (living room/laundry room/office) and the upper level (bedrooms/bathroom).

I close those doors so I can be in another part of the house with minimal cleaning smell. I open the windows in the kitchen and dining room, as well. The gas oven, even in the dead of winter, will heat both those rooms toasty warm with windows open.

The electric oven is far more controlled in the heat it throws. As does Kelly, I prefer electric to gas. I tend to use the electric oven for messier roasting/baking in order to run the gas range's self-clean cycle as infrequently as possible.

With all this talk

I did mine last night after dinner.  It hadn't been cleaned since before Easter so it was due.  I opened the kitchen window, and closed the door between the Butler's pantry and the dining room and it's all ready to be wipped out this morning.
