Hello I have been following this sight for years and have found it to be priceless in its wealth of information. Now I'm hoping someone out there can help me with an answer to a concern I have. My Maytag Neptune washer 5500 series is 7 years old and while I have never had an issue with it I'm wondering how many more years I can expect from it before something goes out on it. I usually do 3 to 5 loads a week and I don't abuse or overload. I also wash in hot and use bleach. Thanks everyone for your input and for such a wonderful sight of knowledge.

Howdy. I'm just the first to come along. No Neptune expert. So if anyone comes along saying I'm wrong, they're probably right. But *I think* the worst bugs were out of Neptunes by the time you got yours. The bearings "do" fail but they will make themselves known before they refuse to work anymore.
A vulnerability is the pump. It is completely unprotected. No sump, no screen, no nothing. I just watched the Maytag Man pull one apart. It got a baby sock stuck in it. Just like our 1949 Westinghouse I learned how to fix in 1954. They can also ingest coins. So check pockets for ANYthing loose, and wash very small items in mesh bags. The good news is, those things don't "kill" the pump, it just has to be disassembled and cleared. Exactly how he got it out without releasing 6 gallons of water that smelled like death onto the floor, I forgot to ask.

It sounds like you should keep doing what you are doing, you may get another year or 10 years or longer out of this washer, the real key to long life is to find a good independent repair company with a good reputation so when something eventually goes wrong you will have a good chance of getting many more years use out of this washer. I believe with your usage profile you should be able to get 20-30 years out of a modern front load washer. Good Luck John.

its a matter of a few ideas, grab another used Neptune set now, and store for the future.....
and/or as you use your machine today, drop a dollar in the piggy bank for every load you do with the machine now, by that time, you should have enough saved for a new machine....just a thought!....
and if you really followed our site and thoughts....Speed Queen is the way to go for longevity and reliability....a little more money, but worth it in the long run
take care of your Neptunes, I bought a few sets for around 100.00 or so dollars....outside of one needing bearrings, and a few small pieces....they run top dollar!......thats why I have 10 so far in the fleet!

Thank you Yogitunes. I hope this machine lasts many years. It is a great machine. It also replaced a 33 year old Maytag A207 that was my Grandmothers. But agreed, Speed Queen is my choice if replacement ever happens. BTW, your Neptune collection is beautiful. If only I had the room.
