Greeks in Melbourne

Hi Toggles

Yes, it is Melbourne with a huge Greek population. (that is, a huge number of Greeks, not a number of huge Greeks. Though maybe that too...) I have heard that Melbourne has the highest number (or maybe percentage) of Greek people of any city outside of Greece.

I grew up in Frankston, a southern suburb of Melbourne and a place with a large number of recent arrivals at the time. At school I had friends with last names Karakitsos, Findikakis and Pavlidis, guess where they were from? Frankston is a beachside suburb and every year there were articles in the local newspaper about the annual Greek Orthodox baptisms at the Frankston pier. (was it at Easter? sorry, I don't remember.)

Melbourne has a thriving Greek community, and SBS TV has its own home gardening show, Vasili's Garden, showing home gardens in the (mostly Greek and Italian) northern suburbs of Melbourne. It is a fun, homely show, not slick and over-produced.

Chris.

Hi Chris!

In America I am a Greek-American, and in Greece I'd be an American Greek. Hopefully one takes the best of both worlds/cultures and the final product is passable as human. LOL

The only "big" things about Greeks would be their / (our?) egos, arrogance and names. It gotten to the point that my mother's maiden name is the PERFECT securuty question and I just spell it at this point; no sense in pronouncing it.

My mother's aunt (who married into that name) simply shorteneted it to somtthing more Anglicized and used it that way. She told her husband, "You, I love. Your name? Not so much!"

My family's tax returns ( and other offical documents) had a/k/a (also known as) all over them.

Just like the Chinese do here, many Greeks take on a "regular" English name to be able to get by.

The net migration between USA and Greece is negative (i.e. OUT of the USA). Not a bad place, but the negatives are: it's hard to make a good living, opportunity is limited, and it's full of Greeks! LOL

OK enough preaching and pointless rambling. Thanks for the shout-out!
