question for Samsung and LG owners re: parts availability and warranty service

Hey all, a friend of mine from high school asked for help re: new washer selection. She is recently (July) widowed and I suspect this is the first major decision/purchase she's had to do alone. She lives in GA so none of her old pals are locally available to help (we all grew up in San Diego). I'm trying to help via e-mail.

In the past year or two, I saw some unhappy posts from new washer owners---either LG or Samsung, can't remember which---about poor availability of parts for either LG or Samsung. Something about warranty service taking an inordinate amount of time due to lack of parts.

LG does well in CR ratings and a number of her FB friends have suggested LG. I suggested several WP models (9050 or 94HEX) which are highly rated by CR.

Is the LG and/or Samsung parts availability still an issue? Or has this problem been resolved. I told her that I thought the problem affected LG, but that I would check with the experts here.

And if you have any other comments/advice re: Samsung or LG, it's welcome here!

PARTS AND SERVICE AVAILBIBLITY

Even here in the nations capital you can not get decent reasonable cost service on ANY foreign brand, The good servicers listed in Angies List and Consumers Check Book generally not touch any of them. L G and Sam-sung have been among the worst. When I go to our appliance disturbers ever week you would not believe all the LGs, SSs, Bosches, and yes even Meiles machines that are not anywhere close to ten years old waiting to be crushed. Where as most of the domestic brands are 10-25 years old.

Spares & Service For LG and Samsung

For once combo and I agree on almost everything.

The spares availability for both Samsung and LG leaves much to be desired and unless there is an authorized servicer, for the brand chosen, close to your friend, I would stay away. As combo says most of the independent servicers will not touch them. Should there be a servicer for the brand chosen close to your friend I would suggest that she ask for references from clients, remembering that said servicer is only going to refer her to ‘satisfied’ clients, and see what sort of response she gets.

Once again, CU's advice on choosing a brand of appliance rings true: make sure you have local service for the brand. You don't say where in GA she lives, but unless it is in a large metropolitan area, she should go with something sold and serviced in her town and probably something domestic like WP or SQ. Also, while it is tempting to buy from a big box store, she should check the appliance store(s) in town, if any, to see what they sell and service. People who have to service what they sell don't like to sell trouble.
