I have a Maytag washer and dryer that came with the house I bought last year. They both work excellent except for recently the washer has started vibrating really bad during every spin cycle. I know it's an A208 Maytag but that's it. (My sister owns a topline state of the art washer and dryer and recently commented on how quiet and efficient my pair of Maytags are!) I'd hate to think this is the end. Can't seem to find any info on this model or a manual. Anybody have any suggestions?

Make sure the leveling legs are not extended too far down. If they are not rusted, they should be as close to the machine base as possible, and then adjusted to the floor and lock nut tightened against the washer base. Washer should sit solidly on the floor front to back and side to side. Hope this helps.
Also could be worn damper pads or a worn brake or tub bearing.

Could be the damper pads as suggested,or maybe a broken tub support spring. Take the front off,and run it through a spin cycle,while CAREFULLY looking at the mechanism.Broken spring will be obvious.

this is probably very fixable, and parts are still available. An A208 is worth fixing.

I love my A208. Don't part with it. Get it fixed. Even though it has a smaller tub, you won't find a better machine than the 06,08,10,12 series Maytags.

A208 Replacement motors
Hi all -
While we're on the topic of the A208, I noticed that the original motor on mine has a copper, cylindrical appearance, whereas the replacement motor is much smaller, and square in shape. Why the difference? Does the replacement motor sit inside the housing of the original motor? Is there a difference in noise? I suspect that the old motor is worth re-building, so will save it. Thoughts anyone?

I think you will find that replacement motors on any brand of washer are rarely identical to the original one. Manufacturers tend to have more than one source of motors and will use the one they got the best deal on from a supplier. The machines are usually configured to accomodate any motor that may have been used in production so that will fit in any machine. Let's them carry much less parts stock, too

Certainly the springs are worthy to check visually. These early "dependable care models" allow you to access almost anything through the front panel removal. My mom bought this model in about 1972 I think, and it still operates. I did notice about 5 years ago that the thing was really noisy and vibrating, so the replacements of both belts(motor to transmission and motor to pump) made the thing run like new.(You have to replace them both, they work in sync) She was happy and hates my new Maytag front loader at my home. This older series is the best washing machine ever made for simplicity and endurance, ease of repair and of course, dependibility. If the belts slip and dont grip, you will get vibration. Also, the motor mount should be on a "sled" like mechanism that is spring loaded but has some give, check this for seizure or lack of spring. Phil
