Question/poll for those of you with refrigerators that use replaceable water filters

I know. I hate when it's time to order filters. I always get two at a time and look high and low online for best price/shipping and I always end up ordering from filtersfast. Those filters are expensive. I use water out of the fridge for drinking, coffee, tea, etc. I'd say I use a pretty good amount. They definitely work. The water tastes great.

I've heard people say you can leave them in for years and they still work, and others have said not to do that, that bacteria can grow in them after a while, so even though it's not restricted, I change them anyway just to be safe. Who knows, I could be throwing a perfectly good filter away that still has a lot of life in it every six months.

I have a Samsung french door fridge I bought December of 2009. It's got the filter in the top rear corner inside and I've not replaced it yet, however I will be soon. I noticed the last week or so the flow has been diminishing.

I'd not really thought about it until reading this thread, but I agree, I think the filter replacement light is timed vs. flow metered. Mine goes red about every 6 months, but I just reset it.

I bocked at the filter cost, especially when wanting me to replace it twice a year. However I also just ordered two filters thru Amazon. When I’m on the second one, I'm going to look into that filter cap/plug thing. I think I’ll install another one of those in-the-water-line filters that goes behind the fridge. I had one for my previous Amana side by side, replacing it about every 2 years. The installers took it out when they installed this fridge. I have a water softener, but no other filter systems.

I had a Kenmore elite french door (LG made). On the control panel it would light up a symble to change the filter. Mine was based on the number of gallons it filtered. So when the light came on, I changed it, it was usually about once a year. However, I did have to go to sears to get the filter and it was $48 dollars everytime.

Our WP refrigerator water reservoir deteriorated, so we don't use any water from the dispenser, however we put in the bypass and use a outboard water filter we installed on the wall behind the refrigerator. It filters out cysts too and other stuff that the original filter missed.

It's used for ice only and we replace it about once per year. For drinking/cooking water we have a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink.

Do not protect the Ice Maker from failure, as they do not remove the harmful minerals that sometimes do cause problems.

I had to have a service call yesterday on the whirlpool ss because the freezer door was not closing properly. I guess the feet were not adjusted properly. Oh well dumb me. I got to ask the tech about the water filter and he said it was a timed light. The light on the door is yellow right now telling me to order another filter soon. Maybe it will turn red shortly. The filter is located in the back top right of the refrig. We have also used a lot of ice and water this summer. Will order a couple soon when i have a chance. Have not noticed any difference in taste or pressure.

My parents' water still tastes good with a two year old filter, but the only water flow they had going through the filter during that period of time was water for ice cubes. And the metal bail cuts off icemaking when then don't consume ice. My guess is we should replace it in six months or so if they use the water a lot. Their model does not have an indicator light that tells you to replace the filter; I wrote the change out date with felt pen on the filter itself.
