I believe Fairy Automatic had just been launched around teh time I was born (1988). Ahhh, the powder I grew up with .

In terms of the G's - are you calling me a weakling to the extent that my intelligence has been shaken about? I'd like to see you ride Oblivion 3 times in a row and then proceed to 2 go's on Rita ;-). And how dare you insinuate that I am a drinker!!! I haven't even touched the stuff!!! o

(This is almost as bad as the banter on Look North LOL).

AUTOMATIC

I'm afraid to say I can remember when the supermarket shelves had one or at most two 'Automatic' powders and they were confined to the top shelf!!!

Jon - I had forgotten all about Radion and if Surf smells like that, I shall be getting some 'cos I loved that. I had a hotpoint TT as a student and used to buy refil bags of Radion. Why did they stop it????

I bought some Persil Colour powder yesterday as it was only £1.99. Haven't used it for years and the fragrance is unrecognisable. It used to be really lovely and now it has a cloying and sickly sweet aroma. Why don't they just leave things alone?

Talking of blue Comfort, I was in Wilkinsons last week and picked up a 2 litre bottle of Neon softener (only 35p). I imagined it would smell like old chip fat but actually, it reminded me of old blue Comfort. I didn't buy it but at 35p, I might give it a go one day. If it is no good I can always use it to make the drains smell good.

Also in Wilkinsons they had Washpods, a new liquid capsule range. I never use caps/tabs etc due to mega soft water/overdosing probs. But at 2 boxes for a quid I indulged. It smell really good and lingers on the clothes even after line drying. Unfortunately, the contents of both boxes got wet and were ruined so ended up in the bin!!!

Hello all, I love these type of threads - thanks for my reading pleasure!

I must just say that I've looked on ebay just now and there's a bloke selling an old Hoovermatic twin tub incase anyone's interested. I'm too dumb to post a link but if you search for that you'll find it - it's in Edinburgh. What interests me more personally is the washing machine in the background - OMG, if only he were selling that....Jon and Darren .....you must take a look especially and you will drool as I did!

Hoovermatic you are whetting my appetite for lots of products with your tales! I am going to raid my stocks and try Fairy with yellow Lenor for sure - this is not a combination I have tried. I can't stand any sort of Comfort except `Pure' with Ariel tabs. Ariel tabs are nice with yellow lenor, and even better IMO is Daz with yellow Lenor. I find Persil non bio a good detergent to use with any softener because the smell is so light they don't clash.

Agree entirely about Bold - also used to love the 80s / early nineties big blue box stuff.

Why can't the manufactures dig out some old recipes and for novelty value release `80's Ariel!' or `Vintage (turqoise) Comfort'! As a limited edition thing, you know? I'm sure I've heard loads of people comment that they used to like a product then it disappeared - I think this may be a valid marketing idea. How I would love to be able to get some vintage 80s detergent for my 80s Hotpoint when it arrives on Tuesday

Top Shelf Powders...

Ha..Ha...LOL... sounds obscene but true, twinny powders everywhere...It is true about the colour, as we get Whitness Mad, the companys have changed the formuls so now they look like a box of grey white chalky clumpy stuff...the Persil of the 70`s, (see pic above) was a rich creamy free flowing powder..

Nick, the washer behind the twinny is the Hoover A3060, the first Electronic 11oo spin machine...the three buttons where for the spin speeds, 500, 800 & 1100 rpm, I`m looking out for the keymatic version at the moment to make a set...

This is my favourite, the Hoover A3008, just found the matching dryer..

Jon, admire your guts, Its my worst nightmare being on a fairgroud ride, the only "G"`s I`ll be pulling is with my Frigidaire spinner...

Hoover A3060

That Hoover A3060 was one of the Hoover washing machines I grew up with... used to sit on my nana's kitchen floor watching it, until it got replaced by a Hotpoint WM25 which she won in a competition. I have no doubts that if she had kept her A3060, she'd still be using her Hoover today and not some new crappy Hotpoint WF340!

I also remember those Persil and Pure New Wool stickers on her machine too!!

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but the A3060 did 5 rinses didn't it? Last time I saw it going was when I was 8 or 9 though, so my memory might have failed, if not even more so after being on so many roller coasters )

Another question guys since we have gone all nostalgia. Did you guys in the UK have top loaders if so when did the transition to front loaders begin and why?

There were a few TL around and I think they were seen as the automatic alternative to Twin Tubs, which were hugely popular here. I certainly remember my mother wanting a TL with agi action when she finally replaced her Hoovermatic. In the end she relented and bought a very basic Bendix FL. She beleived that without the vigerous agitator/pulsator wash action, clothes would not be cleaned properly. How wrong she was!! Prior to that, most of the TL type machines were wringers.

Front Loaders in Australia

Jim, you are quite right that F.L.'S are growing in popularity here in Oz and I am not sure where you live but here in N.S.W. just recently Sydney Water(the government authority in charge of our water supply),have been offering a $150.00 cash back if you purchase a washer with a 4 or 5 star water efficiency rating,mind you it only applies to F.L.'S and you can get a couple of T.L.'s who also have a similar water saving rating however the cashback does not apply to them.
Do you think the authorities here may possibly be trying to phase out the large capacity top loaders over time thus forcing people onto F.L.'s?,also something amusing when I bpught my new T.T. recently my mate at the appliance store was telling me that the T.T. may be on the verge of a comeback here down under as they do sell quite a few in regional areas.

Yes We Did!!

Hi Jim

We did have a number of top loaders in UK in the sixties, mainly Hotpoint (like your Gala) and Servis (Wilkins Servis).

I know the Servis machine was exported to Aus, The Servis machine was produced in 1963 the model MK22, the last was the Servis MK55 in 1970.

Hotpoint Produced their machines into the 90`s,this is based on the filter flow GE.

The later Servis machine, MK41 onwards, offered a two stage agitator with a snap on Power Fin for a cotton wash vigerous action, 9lb load, H & C fill, 650 rpm.

I`ve put a link to some pics in yahoo albums, have a look and let me know what else you remember..particularly Wilkins Service..

Hi Mike I had already looked at your photos and notice you have a Simpson Delta we use to have one of those it didn't last for very long. We use to have a wringer washer I was very young I remember not being allowed to go near it just in case I got my hand caught. Then we had a Whirlpool washer our first fully automatic top loader I loved lifting the lid and watching it splash the clothes around. We moved house and had a brand new Simpson washer and dryer provided with the house late 70's with big buttons I dont know the model. Then a Delta followed by a Kleenmaid(Speed Queen) great in beginning then turned into a clothes shreader a Fisher and Paykel such a fun futuristic machine. I then moved to Melbourne and bought a LG front loader because of space issues and finally my Miele babies.

Steve I have never used a TT and have no idea how they work. I think with our water conditions governments should restrict machines with anything less a 4 or 5 star water rating please explain a TT to me.

T.T. Operation

Hi Jim,
A Twin-Tub is a machine which has 2 separate tubs a washtub on the left and a spinner tub on the right and basically once you have washed a load in the washtub you manually transfer the clothes into the spinner and start spinning the soapy wshwater out and start rinsing,How I do this is once soapy water has been spun out I saturate the clothes in the spinner with clean water and spin it out repeat once again and then spin dry, in the meantime while doing this,you start washing the next load in the washtub, the benefit of this type of machine is that you can wash and rinse/spin 2 loads at the same time.
Ialso find it to be a great water saver as I spin the soapy water from the first load back into the washtub thus recycling the same water, the same can be done with the rinse water as well.
The only downside (and this does not bother me),is that it is not a machine you can just set and forget, there is some manual work involved,i.e. putting the washed loads into the spinner tub.
I find with my new T.T., I can wash,rinse and spin a 6kg load in about 15 minutes.
