This is not a new find, I already have it in my posession for a while. I never used this machine that we overhere in the Netherlands used to call a Shampooral. I know there is an official name for it, but I forgot it. Anyway, the problem that I have with it is that I can't get off the brushes that are on it now. I just don't know how to do it. On a different machine that I saw at a thrift store recently there were other brushes installed that you could just pull off. It doesn't seem possible with these. Can anyone help me? First a picture of the polisher/carpet cleaner itself.

Pete,

There are actually no screws in the middle of the brushes, but there are two smaller holes a little off the middle. However there are no screws in there as it looks.

A white couch is indeed a little dangerous, but contrary to what the label says, I washed them. Only a tiny bit of shrinking. Noone noticed it.

The installed brushes are carpet shampoo brushes

They should just pull right off, however if they are brushes for a newer or different machine, that would acount for them not being able to be removed.
Have you tried prying them off gently with a screwdriver?

Jeff,

No, I haven't tried using a screwdriver yet, I was afraid to damage the machine. BTW, there are brushes in the third picture, I assume those are the original ones? They are very worn, so I guess they replaced them because of that. Would you by any chance have a picture of the other side of these new brushes?

Louis, these floor machines typically had two sets of brushes, one for carpet shampooing and one for scrubbing bare floors. The extra pads are for more scrubbing effect or polishing on bare floors. The brushes on it should be removeable, somehow. My mother had a similar machine, I believe it was a Regina, had a detergent tank on the handle.

I Have Almost That Exact Machine!!

Except it is 110V. Those brushes should just pop off. The shampoo brushes for rugs are on and the other brushes are the scrubbing brushes for bare floors. If they have been on for a while, there may be some corrosion which will require a little elbow grease to get off. You may also try spraying some lubricant (like WD-40) on the stems under the brushes to try and loosen them.

Brushes...

Most likely you have a mixed set of brushes, and the ones installed on your Hoover are for either another model or for another brand entirely.
Try prying them off gently with a screwdriver, or use the WD-40 as Fred suggested.

Aren't they Floor-A-Matic Brushes?

The Brushes that are on his machine in that picture really look like the brushes that are intended for use on the Floor-A-Matic; the bristles are straight, not sprawled out like the others. It is my understanding that the 'straight' brushes are only to be used on the FAM (they fit inside the shampoo tray--see picture), and the 'sprawled' brushes are for all non-Floor-A-Matics. I'm not sure if the Floor-A-Matic was made in/for other countries...if so, maybe at some point someone purchased the wrong brushes and made them fit.

Just a thought.

Fred
