It happened again, this time 14 years later.
Here I go again.
It's just my luck for another unit to fail before the 20-year mark.
This unit failed because the water line broke near the solenoid behind the refrigerator, shortening out the inverter box. I thought the water line in the door area had frozen again, so I used the heat gun on low to defrost the door area. I heard the water go through the system, but no water coming through the door. I tried several times with no luck. The next day, there was water on the floor on the freezer side, and everything started to melt, though the refrigerator was still cold then. Everything was lost because the compressor was not cycling, yet the fan and the defroster were working.
Long story short, GE is no longer making the inverter (<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Part #WR55X10979)</span>, so I had to search the wild for a replacement part. The part is universal, with a substitution connection that did not work. As you know, I had to find a new unit on Amazon and match the 3.3A for a perfect match. I installed the new part, and the first Ice from the Ice Maker happened. Yes!
Reminder: When you clean your coils once or twice a year, check your water line for hardness connected to the solenoid. Under the right circumstances, this pex line will eventually break and may cause problems.
Also, I updated the three bulbs to LED, and I must say that it whitened the interior like a new fridge.
