This thread was prompted by 63getelevision's nice comment about the quilt on my bed in the "Three Bears" photos.

Growing up in the South, I also grew up around hand-made quilts. My grandmother and mother made them, and the church ladies even used to have "quilting bees" - right out of Mayberry RFD!

I have two beautiful old quilts. The one you see in the "Three Bears" photos came from a thrift shop. The other one is very old and fragile so I don't use it. It was given to me by an elderly friend. See photos.

My mom only made about three quilts, and I didn't get any of them. Hopefully my sister has them. Come to think of it, there may be one in the blanket chest in Mom's old room. My mom was very southern, also. There is a cousins reunion in her hometown in Virginia, the children of her brother and five sisters, and their children. Unfortunately, some cousins are gone. This will happen in September. Anyhow--this additional quilt is even more wonderful because you got it from a friend. Oh, and the bears are a great complement to Eva and that quilt.

I am not sure how old this quilt is but my presumption, based on my friend's description of it being "very, very old" was that it's older than the 1950s. But I don't know, really.

My mom has a cedar chest full of quilts. She has dropped hints that "you children will divide them up someday." A sad thought no matter how you look at it............. :(

A few years ago, while visiting Gansky in Omaha, we went and visited (crashed) a quilt exhibition. What a fabulous display of beautiful quilts. Gansky's mother makes them too.
I just think it really is a blessing to know how to make them.

That is a beautiful old quilt and a lot of work does go into them. A few years ago we started a quilting club where I worked. Our first project was a small quilt for a child or a baby. Though I do sew my own clothes, I had no idea the amount of planning, cutting and sewing that goes into making even a small quilt.
