Rain Barrel

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

IIRC softener that added along with detergent, always had nice chrome Capped SQ's in the tv commercial.

Rain Barrel

Rain Barrel was made by Johnson Wax and it was designed to be added to the wash cycle along with the detergent. It could also be added to the rinse but only about half as much. It in my opinion had the best scent of any fabric softener ever. I remember Consumer Reports slammed it for softening when added to the wash. They also said it made clothes look dingy. What do they know? It was also more expensive than other brands and it came in odd sizes (28oz and 48 oz bottles). It was introduced in the early seventies and gone by the mid eighties. I wish Johnson's Wax would bring it back just the way it was. I have been hoping to find a vintage bottle on e-bay or elsewhere for several years. If anyone wants to see what it looks like, Robert has it in his collection.

I really like Rain Barrel

I agree wash&where. I liked Rain Barrel too. I always used it in the rinse water. I am not a real fan any longer of modern liquid rinse aids. I think that the smell is offensive and down right nasty. My 2 cents worth. Gary

Rain Barrel would build up or something on 1970s disco polyester; made it sort of yellowish.

Not that I personally ever had anything to do with disco polyester. *grin*

(Explanation of joke for you young whippersnappers: THERE WAS NOTHIN' ELSE TO BUY BACK THEN! Everything was polyester for a while there. The '70s had their downside, LOL.)

RainBarrel

Worked quite well as a rinse added softener, but was not so fabulous as a wash added softener.

It did have a nice scent.

When it was out, I was doing most of the laundry for Ma, my sister, and me, and I was allowed to choose the chemicals by then, too. I alternated RainBarrel with Downy.

I found its bottle to be particularly easy to handle.

LOl.. Thanks for the lingo..

BAck to the Rain Barrell
My mom stock piled the stuff and used it for years and years... I think that when they stopped selling it, a friend of her's who worked for a local store gave her a few cases of the 48 oz bottles.. It smelled good...

We had Rain Barrel in the 70's. My mother hated fabric softners, was convinced they ruined the machines and felt they were unessary with a dryer, but my older sister bought it and used it for her clothes(PO'd my mother) along with Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo. One had to be Natural in those days, Rain Barrel and Herbal Essence seemed to be "chemical free", or natural, which was total BS, just marketing to the Woodstock/Granola/James Taylor wanna be generation.

I do seem to remember another wash cycle fabric softener called "First In" (not kidding toggles). It was in a yellow bottle, had a lemony (I think) scent and was a thick white gel..remimded me of.......oh NEVER MIND!!!!!!!! TOO MUCH INFO!!!
