I had a problem recently, where my Windows XP computer was taking an age to open website pages (IE7). It turned out that AVG 9.0 was the problem, so I switched to Avast!

AVG 9.0 seems to be currently okay with Vista and IE8 on the laptop.

Actually, if you use a program like Norton Ghost, you can change your Drive C: out with a larger one without having to reinstall Windows again. Just run the program, change the hard disks and you are good to go!

No problems here with AVG 9.0814 on W2K with Firefox.

The new DSL modem/router fixed a myriad of internet problems...

Yes, that answers my questions just fine. I just wanted to see how much longer you will be able to use your computer before you have to go shopping again. It looks like you'll have a few years left before you do.

My computer axiom:

Don't buy a new computer because someone tells you that you need one, buy a new computer when the computer you have has been fully expanded and still doesn't do what you want it to at the speed you want it to.

That saves a lot of people a lot of money. My crazy sister and her husband used to buy a new computer every other year. Why?
Oh, those old ones just get too slow. They are too lazy to do any kind of maintenance on their systems, and most of the time they don't even know/care what kind of software is on their computers, either.

You can also save a lot of $$$ on computers by not buying the latest and greatest, but waiting a year for the prices to drop.

And there is also the benefit of not being on the "bleeding edge". Corollary: Never by the .0 rev of any software, especially Microsoft. Wait for the first or second service pack.

Generally I agree with you on Windows, I've been using it since 3.1, but windows 7 seems to be excellent, no issues. Ran the RC's for quite a while and am running public release since Oct intro and it's very solid and pain free. I see no reason to wait IF you need a new OS.

Windows 7 may be the exception that proves the rule.

One might even consider Windows 7 to be a service pack for Vista.

Window 7 runs excellent, it put all of the previous versions of windows to shame including vista! No need to wait for SP1.

I've installed Win 7 on a few friends and families new computer systems. It is the smoothest and slickest front end so far. But if you dig down a lot of it is the same as Windows XP. There is not a big learning curve for anyone with Win 95' forward. Of course, you have lots more RAM available to 7', like 8GB rather than 4.
The only problem I came across is one of my cousins has over 5K songs on her hard disk. Windows Media Player 12 did not like this. Sometimes it would find them, sometimes only a part of them. We are awaiting Win 7 SP1 for a fix for this.

But Win 7 on a Intel Core I5 with 8GB and a 1TB hard disk just screams! We are using a Intel MB, with a TOL NVida video card with 1GB RAM. Needless to say, my family was very happy!

OK so I have taken the router offline and "speak" right to the modem which connects to the DSL line.

Performance comes and goes, so I do really think it's the modem or the line.

I have also re-loaded Windows onto my system.

OK, here is an embarrasing question. I can no longer print from the web. Say bank statements from IE, for example. Where has my printer icon gone? I have tried to add such an icon and have tried to add various toolbars to get it back.

How embarassing! (sp? )

The printer drivers needs to be reinstalled.
If you go into your device manager, it should show you what drivers is not installed.

You said you re-installed windows.
Did you installed all current MS updates?
Also, make sure your Java is updated.</p> Also Adobe, Adobe Flash.

OK Steve, now I see where you're going.
Right click on a empty space of the IE toolbar. (Gray Matter Area) LOL. Go to Customize/Add or Remove Commands, then adjust what you need on the toolbar.

You also may want to update your toolbar with MS Window Live Toolbar. It's really nice and helpful.
