Who has noticed the many changes in Rave hairspray? For years,it was THE best hairspray in the #4 aerosol formula. Then,it was soft feel formula.Enough people complained, because a few years ago,it said Original Rave Hold is back.It was NOT as good as original, but it was closer to the original than the nasty soft feel formula. It has gone thru
I'd say at least two more changes, and not for the better.

And now,let us spray

Funny thing,I've also used AquaNet,which is EXACTLY the same formula as Rave, the same company even makes them. The fragrance, however, is slightly different, even in the unscented version, which still is scented BTW,it just supposedly has a non-lingering fragrance, but AquaNet went thru ALL the same changes at the same time as Rave.Years back, before Rave arrived,AquaNet,in the pink and black can,had the Extra Super Hold Formula, which contained up to three times more holding power than conventional sprays according to the can.'Tis true.Your hair was so laquered into place that you could NOT even comb it.I loved it.But it was very hard to wash out unless you occasionally used dishwashing liquid or Baking Soda to strip thru it.One gets the impression that the people at Betty Bouffant's Beehive Beauty Boutique had stock in the stuff.Today's extra super hold Aqua Net washes out easily, because it has little hold like its Rave cousin.I am apsolutely certain that the lowered VOC requirements has something to do with all of this.Manufacturers have been forced to lower the alcohol content of hairspray to supposedly save the atmospheric continuem,so to speak. The alcohol is needed for quick evaporation of the spray.Contrary to popular belief, alcohol in hairspray does not really dry out the hair.It dries too quick to have a chance to do that. But on wet hair it could because the wetness gives it time to dry out your tresses. Rave and AquaNet both have added more water to their sprays to replace some of the alcohol. They go on wetter, take longer to dry, and sometimes droop the hair as a result. What tress distress.

Hairspray

Speaking of which, just hit the Luxor here in Las Vegas. An old friend was in town and we went to see it a couple of weeks ago. Very good, close up seats and almost got gassed by the hairspray they were using on stage. It appeared to be AquaNet! Long live hair hoppers!!

*Paging Tracy

Turnblad, Tracy Turnblad!*

When I do use a product, it's usually some sort of mousse. Baby fine hair, as well as thinning....

It really annoys me when manufacturers mess with a working formula.

However, when it comes to what remains of my hair, I'm a minimalist. Shampoo, a few minutes with a blow dryer, and my fingers.

David, you're certainly right about Aqua Net going on "wetter". I also think the spray isn't as finely atomized as it used to be. Still, the Ultra Super Hold beats 'em all, including professional lacquer.

They say that hairspray depletes the ozone layer. Frankly, I think it's worth it.

Back in the 80's...

When Texas had Ann Richards for Govenor at her inaugural ceremony which was held outside, the winds were blowing very strong. But not a hair on her head moved. The newspapers reported she was having a "Aqua-Net" kind of day.

Hey Maytag...you are right about the atomizer being different now than in the 60's 70's and poss the 80's....spray had to go on the hair much drier as the hair was heavily backcombed (teased) sprayed and then combed into shape. The setting lotions were stiff and then the spray made it a "shampoo/set and insurance policy!"
