Very nice!

I have never seen this set before!
Was this the first thought of the "side by side"?
They look to be in very good shape. Would love to see the insides.
Thanks for posting.

They put me in mind of the set on the beverly Hillbillies when they had two fridges by the table like that. Sometimes tho its changed for a built in china cabinet.

Wasnt the Kalvinator food-a-rama the first true side by side?Anyone got a picture to post I havent seen one of those in a long time

Still in Limited Production Today!

Whirlpool & GE both as well as under Kenmore names still make these in limited production, one unit a refrigerator and the other all freezer.

They were very popular during the mid to late fifties and sixties. These RCA Whirlpool models were part of an entire RCA Whirlpool custom kitchen which included all appliances and metal kitchen cabinets very similar to a Youngstowne Kitchen except with RCA Whirlpool signatures all over them.

The next best thing to an RCA Whirlpool Miracle Kitchen of the future!

There's an awesome commercial for the Food-A-Rama on the video page. (See link below and then scroll down the page to the refrigerator section.) It's from a time when commercials were worth watching! (Today's commercials are so annoying that I just click past them!)

Enjoy!

All refrigerator/all freezer units . . .

Subzero has been the king of these for a very long time now; using two of the refrigerators and one of the freezers is pretty common for a really large home. They don't have this lovely Mamie pank though!

Frigidaire makes matching all freezer and all fridge units

Frigidaire makes an all freezer and all fridge, designed for side by side installation. There is even a trim kit for it that makes it look like a built in unit. Each unit is about $1000, and for $2000 plus the trim kit, that's a lot of refrigeration for about 15% of the cost of twin Sub Zeroes.

Nancy and Ronald Reagan

As some of our older readers may recall, Reagan was once a spokesman for GE on television. When the Reagans built their new home on San Onofre Drive in Pacific Palisades in the late 1950s, it was tricked out with all the latest GE appliances. Full electric kitchen, cha cha laundry room, electric drapes, electric eye security and outdoor lighting, the works, in return for the Reagans appearing in tv and print ads featuring their new home. It may have been taxable, maybe not, but it was free. I have seen a photo of them eating in their kitchen and they appeared to have a double freezer and fridge, most likely two units with a cabinet enclosure. They also had double wall ovens with round porthole style windows. I don't know if all of the Reagan appliances were available to the public for sale or if some of them were prototypes.

I have seen

that pair of side by side stainless set. They came out of an estate here in Georgia and are now sitting in the shop for sale in Rabun County, city of Clayton in the north Georgia mountains. I wish I had room in my kitchen for that pair.

I just swapped doors out on a Whirlpool separate Freezer/Fridge for an insurance claim. So the trend is alive. It would be nice if you had room, but the prices are ridiculous. Kitchen Aid even makes a top compressor "high end" model. I ask the owner of the Appliance Store if it was a sub-zero rebranded, and he said no. I think Jenn Air also has a top compressor unit. Top compressors make sense to me, hot air rises, why the commitment to bottom compressors?

That is a nice pair, I do believe that is what was in the kitchen on the Beverly Hillbillies.
And Yes, the Kelvinator Food-A-Rama was the first true side by side and it was as early as either 52 or 55 there was a site thtat I looked at recently that sells restored vintages ranges and refridgerators and they had an early Food-A-Rama and it was listed for $9,800 as much as I would love one it is not worth that much to me unless I hit the PowerBall jackpot.
