Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

And also

1960 Whirlpool Imperial MARK XII, and my name is Mark. Runs well, but you gotta dial slowly or it won't find pushbutton 1 or 2. And the dispensers work, but also need to be cleaned every few months. And it has that 3 solenoid valve too. What it doesn't have is a matching dryer. It does have a light, but I can't find that pic right now.

Current installed washer lineup Aug 27, 2020 is 1959 WP suds, 1960 WP Imperial, 1973 Speed Queen solid tub, and 1974 Kenmore suds model with the huge tub.
Set aside but working well: 1970's Filter Flo, 2 speed SUDS but small tub. And a early 70's Maytag A608Suds. I only have plumbing and sinks enough for 4!

The ad said 25 years. So where would that put these ? Did the first Whirlpool automatics come out in 48,49 or 50 ?

Mark, your dryer reminds me of my neighbor's dry dial on her 33" wide LK Combo. the cycles for both regular and W'n'W had settings with L, M, H corresponding for light, medium, and heavy.

This document says the first automatic washer manufactured by Ninteen Hundred Corporation under the Kenmore label for Sears was in 1947, a bolt-down nicknamed "The Jeep."

1948 was the first Whirlpool-branded washer.

Says 1949 was the first Whirlpool-branded automatic washer/dryer pair.

1974 is 25 years later (Silver Anniversary) for the LAA pair.

Thank you Glenn. I thought it was 1948 for Whirlpool and thank you too DDFan92.I knew from this site that the first automatic Kenmore came out in 1947, but wasn't quite sure with Whirlpool themselves.

I believe that may very well be a 1963 Whirlpool set. Interestingly enough the dryer has the auto dry and mine doesn’t say auto dry on it anywhere but when I select the preset numbers on the other drying cycle it seems like more of a auto dry since it takes longer to dry on that cycle and I just use the timed drying Wash N Wear cycle since that is more predictable on that setting and here’s the timer dial and temperature buttons on my ‘63 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII dryer

I was thinking the same thinking the same thing about the Whirlpool machines from the early 60’s. The Whirlpool Super Supreme in reply #48 has the same features as the Imperial model which is below my TOL Mark XII in 1963 and 1964 and the Imperial version of my Mark XII dryer has the same features minus the sprinkler and window on the door but otherwise is the same dryer. Richard (speedqueen) has the Imperial version of my Mark XII dryer from 1964

Re: Reply # 33

Yes, that is early 1970s. Although I have seen it before as a 1972 model, the one in the photo has the hidden mercury switch which was last used in 1970.

1963 Imperial Mark 12 Washer and Imperial Dryer

Hi Sean, Your dryer does not have auto dry, the numbered drying cycle are just timed settings, only the Imperial Mark 12 had auto dry in 1963.

Who ever bought your set originally either saved $30 by not buying the TOL dryer or maybe the dealer could not get a turquoise Mark 12 dryer so they went down to the imperial so the pair would mostly match.

In any case you have a great pair, and if you ever find a 63 IM12 dryer you can up grade your imperial dryer to a IM12.

Did you ever fix the two speed blower shifter on your dryer, it is cool to hear the difference in sound when you shift from low to high.

Unfortunately I haven’t fixed the 2 speed belt shifter but it still technically it still works since the wattage of the heating element is stepped down to the 4500 watt heat output. It seems to work just fine on the normal speed with the regular speed blower heat output. Even though this is the older 29” dryer design before they were redesigned in 1966 it seems to work just fine and it only takes about 50 minutes to dry a load of towels on the super speed drying temperature on the Wash N Wear timed drying cycle and that cycle seems to be more predictable in drying time compared to the washer cycle that is just preset by the numbers.

John I believe you are correct on how who ever bought the set saved $30 since the dryer is a Imperial and not a Imperial Mark XII and maybe it was on sale back in ‘63 at the dealer it was bought at since it wasn’t quite a matched set or something. I am sure people did something similar when they bought a Kenmore set from the late 70’s and early 80’s at Sears since a Lady Kenmore washer was optional with a lower model 70 or 80 series dryer if that’s what the customer wanted or something since that is when the control panels of most Sears machines were the same on the 70 series to the Lady Kenmore and it wouldn’t look too out of place having a Lady Kenmore washer being paired up with a 70 or 80 series dryer.
