The 9/11 Spin Cylcle

Not to take away any value from the 9/11 disaster, but IMHO the Bush administration is using 9/11 to curtail, limit and take away individual personal freedoms in the name of "national security".

I was watching a news story on CNN a while back and they had some university professor on stating that the Russians are the ones who were ultimately responsible for 9/11. Huh? What?.....

The way he was trying to spin it was that if the Russians hadn't invaded Afganistan back in the 70's, they never would have gotten the Taliban started and therefore there never would have been a 9/11.

And we have people like this running loose in the U.S.?

I think if someone wants to fly a flag on 9/11, that's fine, it's their own choice.

And for e-mails that contain the "forward this to everyone you know", or forward this to x number of people is usually an indicator of a hoax.

Peace Flag

Dan, I've been looking for a "peace" flag myself for quite a while. IMHO that is the perfect statement and you can still be flying the flag on the holidays when it's appropriate. Is there an on-line resource for these flags?

Well SAID SUDS

They do keep the flag draped coffins out of sight. To my way of thinking that's disrespectful to our fallen Troops and their loved ones.

I heard someone saying the other day they were going to fly their flag upside-down on 9/11 as they truly believe that our country is in a state of crisis due to the lack of leadership, respect for our constitution and laws, our troops dying in vain, etc.

It does make one stop and think...

I started flying a flag in the front yard after 9/11. (It was on a tall flag pole made up of Electrolux wands!) I have a number of friends who live in Manhattan so, along with the shock and grief the entire world felt, I also felt a more personal level of grief from hearing some horrific first-hand accounts of what people I know and love experienced and witnessed.

I stopped flying the flag for the same reasons others have noted. I have no hesitancy whatsoever in expressing my total disgust for the present administration, with all due respect to those who do support him.

I had actually toyed with the idea of flying an upside-down flag tomorrow but since I don't know most of my neighbors very well, and for all I know some looney whack-job might live up the street who decides to bomb my house over my gesture of protest, I thought better of it.

It saddens me to the depths of my being to see what this country is turning into at the hands of the evil, self-serving, pathological criminals who currently run it.

and honestly believe (read: self-deception) they are doing so in "the name of G-d"

uhm........ The versions of "the faith" that are frequenlty seen as the religion of our political leaders (in this country) tend to be a break-away faction of a break-away faction of break-away faction (multiply times 20).

Do they REALLY logically believe the original un-corrupted message of the central founding figure of the faith is ANYWHERE in what has been distorted and interpreted into it?

Since when is this country a theocracy anyway?

Besides, we still can't get portions of this country to elect someone from outside their region, even if someone else is more qualified.

When we as a country learn "how to think" maybe THEN we can try to impose our ways on others. In the meantime we (the country) have a lot of growth to attend to, in my limited ridiculous opinion.

On the freeway into work this morning there was a huge flag drapped upsidedown from one of the avenue over pass bridges. I didn't get it at first, but now that I read Greg's post it makes total sense.

Flag's up

I put mine up this morning. I am as frustrated as anyone else, especially after hearing the latest reports from Petraeus. Also in Time magazine they say we may be in Iraq for the next 10 years.

But, unless these turkeys pull a Hugo Chavez and stop our democracy in it's tracks, we will have a new President in a little over a year. They are only there for 4 to 8 years with our system. So I am marking the anniversary. And I am hopefull for the future.

Speaking of religion, I saw some religious leaders from various faiths being interviewed on CNN the other night. They were discussing the "rights and wrongs" of various religions. The Rabbi made the most sense. He said that there is no such thing as a "correct" religion. They are all pathways to God. Each one just follows a slightly different road. To think anything else would be an abomination.

That statement made a lot of sense to me.

Heaven is your own laundry room; perfeclty executed.

Don't all road lead to Rome?

My own personal brand of "voodoo" is technically labeled "Eastern" (as opposed to Western).

I believe it is a more wide-held belief in the East that that is more than one path to the "laundry room."

Time heals everything, at least partially.

Due to my geographical location the twin-towers are (*ugh were*) very real to me. I wasn't the mushy-gushy type, but only lately can I watch the horror of those videos and not break out into tears.

Of all the events of that day the clincher?

Finally getting home from Manhattan, in a desserted city Manhattan is NEVER empty) getting to my car from the Long Island Railroad, only to find that NONE of the customary radio stations was on the dial in the right place. Stranger even was that TELEVISION stations broadcasting over the radio. Don't know why this affected me. Oh I guess the Emergency Broadcast System actually being used was bizarre to me as well.

The magnitude and repercusiions of the day took a few days to REALLY sink-in, in my head.

The land-line phones were out for other reasons, cell (mobile) phones were jammed and uselss. The only way to get in touch for me was AOL. Radios had been banned in my office a mere week prior.

Wake-up call.

Rather than flying the flag of a guilty government, join me in saying prayers for ever soul who suffered on that day, and if you think about it, I don't know who didn't.

Steve, I was moved by your account because I had a similar realization later. Did any of you notice that for three weeks after 9.11 Britney, Paris and all of the other stupid celebrity news mercifully disappeared from all of the air waves? It was as if the nation woke up for a three week period(we had no choice). And then Bush and his cronies took over and we all fell back to sleep and have remained in that political and sociological coma ever since.

Just taking time out today to remember the horrific attack on our people. There sure was alot of people that died and all they did was just go to work. Just on their way to work.

Helps to keep things in perspective.

A hole instead of two *poles*.

~Due to my geographical location the twin-towers are (*ugh were*) very real to me.

As you may know New York City is at the very southern-most tip of New York State. Northern New Jersey and Southern Connecticut are considered suburbs of NYC, as of course are Long Island and parts of New York State itself.

When returning to NYC from nearby New Jersey via the NJ Turnpike, (a huge, long and wide main artery) it was very comforting to see the tall majestic one-of-kind twin-towers defining lower Manhattan. IT was also geographically orienting. To this day, so many years later, there is just something missing in that spot.

Personally I would have built hollow facsimilies with just a "few" score(s) of occupied levels.

The link is supposed to be:
A funny picture showing the World Trade Center rebuilt in the shape of a middle finger. Sorry about the flag-waving. What can I say.

The interesting thing about the WTC was that I don't think they ever experienced full capacity. They were poorly designed - as only a commercial office complex designed by a government entity could be, lol - and even tenants who located there in the beginning tended to move out, or only leave a small presence there for the cache of the address. There were a few big brokerage firms and such, but it was never really a successful enterprise.

I remember for years the office of the New York State Insurance Commissioner - hardly a glamourous place - was on a few of the very top floors of one of the towers because the rent was so cheap.

But the view from the observation deck was grand. And the towers certainly were landmarks. And the bar (wild blue yonder? World's greatest bar? I can't remember) was a lot of fun.
