Earlier this spring, I created a thread on thinning the heard. Since the site got sold off and has a completely, can’t find the thread I created originally. Anyways, I mentioned I would be selling of my Maytag A810 set (probably just going to give them away since they have been sitting out in the shed for awhile and need quite a bit of work, possibly a rebuild on the washer), but also decided it’s time to let my Maytag A606 and DG407 go. Good machines, just don’t really have the room or space anymore.

Here’s some photos of the Maytag A606 and DG407, will take some more photos next week with the front panel removed on the washer, along with the rear panel on the dryer.

Interesting, that's a Auto Dry HOH dryer, without the moisture sensors on the baffles?
Was it a thermostatic sensor dry instead?

Double throw switch cycling thermostat. This originally started out life as a DG606, then was converted to a 306 since the electronic dry control wasn’t working and had corroded wires from years of the constant burning pilot light being left on. Scored a NOS 407 auto dry timer and decided to put this in.

Maytag first time temperature auto dry dryer was the D407 series, they were probably the last US dryer manufacturer to introduce an auto dry dryer.

Maytag introducedelectronic dryness controls in the early 60s that they had a lot of trouble with so they decided to do this less expensive auto dry system like everybody else.

I was working for Maytag when this model came out. We had a lot of trouble as well because they didn’t put a three wire safety thermostat in and the dryers would just cycle on the safety thermostat and never shut off. Customers would tell us they run all night sometimes.

It also did not have enough range of dryness to get heavy, uneven loads, dry even on more dry and there wasn’t enough cool down time on the wash and wear or regular cycle. Other than that it worked OK I guess.

One experiment I did to my Maytag franken dryer (essentially a Maytag 407, just the console light wired in place of the neon pilot light) is put in a L180-40 thermostat for the high limit. The heating element would stay on for a good 10 minutes or so before the main cycling thermostat would open and advance the timer. Would actually dry a fairly large load of towels in 40 to 50 minutes time, fairly quick with small and medium loads as well. While it did work perfectly fine, the front of the cabinet was a bit too warm for my liking so I just put in a spare L155-10 back in for the meantime.
