it's a Compact 30

That's a last generation Compact 30 drop in range, Tom. Probably from 1978ish.

Edit: One of my catalogues shows this model with a note "expected availability Jan 1976". I think it was part of the Compact 30 model line revision when they moved the clock to the front and eliminated the convenience outlet. They actually offered about 7 different models!

From the time I'd figured out how to mail a letter, I was requesting appliance catalogs and brochures.  I remember several days when we arrived home and the mailbox was literally overflowing with envelopes from GE, Hotpoint, Whirlpool (rather stingy) and of course, Frigidaire.  Frigidaire was always a special treat.  They had the most beautifully done full-line catalog, full color pictures and lots of feature tables, hours of studying and dreaming of my dream kitchen.  This range was always my first choice, I loved the built-in style, Poppy was just a given.  A full-width worktop light was just icing on the cake.

 

I figured they were troublesome, but I would have sprung for the juice-dispenser or message center refrigerator, also in Poppy

Lol Greg my story is the same. I would send in the reply cards from the kitchen magazines with dozens of catalog numbers circled. I still have my very first catalog - for a Frigidaire built in dishwasher from 1960. I was 6 years old.

It looks more like a slide-in, unless you were just talking about the cooktop itself because the original Compact 30 ranges had no backsplash, but after I got up here in 1976, I did not see that many ads for them and while I viewed appliances in department stores, they did not have Compact 30s on display.

This is an actual DI range as it must be supported by the counter top of both sides and rear.

Like the Thermador in your kitchen sitting on the two pieces of wood? But it does not have a backsplash like this one. It seems odd for a DI to have a backsplash. Oh Well.

End of an era

Tom this is from the last GM Frigidaire full-line brochure I have, dated 8/78. They are all drop-in style units. I wonder if they offered this style to capitalize on the glass-top craze, and the Touch-N-Cook range. I suppose it would let them re-coop some of the expense of building a limited demand item (the Touch-N-Cook)

Thank you, Steve. It does make evident, though, the different surface unit arrangement with the range on offer and the traditional arrangement of the surface units on the Compact 30 in your second page of pictures where the 8 inch elements were on the lower left and upper right protecting the 6 inchers in the middle. The newer drop in ranges also had an exposed side frame with the oven door set inside of it while the original Compact 30s had the oven door extend to cover the whole front of the range with no visible frame around the door, sort of like some builtin ovens over the years.
