I went chasing off with a friend to deliver a 51 Cad engine and trans with hope of returning with a radiator for my 57. There was no radiator available, but several other items were. The very nice 76 MGB was tempting but these two other items could trigger my insanity. I was only able to get pictures and phone number so I don’t know if they work. I can call for more information, model numbers and price later. They are for sale but I don’t know enough about appliances to even guess their value. I’m guessing the GE is 20’s and the Crosley early 30’s. This is from Wikipedia, “In 1932, Powel Crosley had the idea of putting shelves in the doors of refrigerators.” I keep thinking that 2 washers, 2 dryers 4 refrigerators and another washer and dryer will be about the same footprint as my Packard and I won’t have to pay license and insurance, less mobile though. Two Great Machines

The GE appears to have an early type of cooling unit but a later control box, and the compressor/condenser has definitely been repainted.  The whole thing is in very good shape and complete with both shelves.

 

I really like the Crosley.  Its exterior design reminds me of the '39 Westinghouse I had that quit in 2008.  Both the removable shelves as well as those in the door seem to put Crosley in a class of its own compared to its contemporaries.

 

Travis can likely provide an accurate year of production for both of these nice refrigerators.

Cool Fridges (!)

Both are neat fridges. I think that the GE monitor top is the first generation monitor top, with the open coils. I have a very similar monitor top fridge. From my experience, bear in mind that moving them is more of a challenge than other fridges. They weigh a LOT more and much of the weight is the top with the compressor/motor. Although the whole top does come off (the motor and top, with the ice unit, lifts off the case), but that requires a couple of very strong people to lift it off and also to transport without damaging the 'hanging' freezing compartment. This likely uses sulfer dioxide as a coolant. They can run forever, I have seen many of these still running as second fridges. The Crosley is really neat, I have never seen such an early Shelvador.

Nice 'fridges, but don't go crazy on a price. I see the Crosley in the $100.00 range, probably a little more for the GE.

Prices

I got the prices for the refrigerators, although I still don’t know if they are in working order. He is asking $300 for the GE and $250 for the Crosley. I found prices ranging from $3000 to $30 for each of them so his seem reasonable. They would be fun to play with, but a bit out of my element. If anyone is interested, I’ll be happy to arrange contact and, if necessary, help with logistics and field questions.
