Ok

I am being given about 100lbs of beef and chicken and such.. Now one does not know how much food this is, but one was told he needed to buy a small freezer...

I whent out shopping tonight and much to my dismay the little cube freezers are hard to come by here in vegas.. apperantly every ones had a run on them.. They few i've found i dont like ( i dont want a shiney metal inside and the magic cehf ones seem so cheap and flimsy... Plus i would like the extra fridge space..So im looking for a CHEAP basic fridge...
Should i just get a used one of craigslist and pray it lasts or should i get a brand new one...
Here is one contender... Scratch and Dent for $299

Home depot's site is down, but there is a Amana (Link below) for $380 thats a whirlpool... And then a Americana branded one and a hotpoint/ge...

Im lost.. I love my el cheap farily simple whirlpool sxs... But whirlpool top freezers seem dinky compared to the white westing house/frigidaire units

FRIGIDAIRE LFFC09M $278 !!

I went on line at Lowes and found a great 9 cu ft FRIGIDAIRE chest freezer. It is listed (item number 90724)at only $278!! free shipping too1.it has a 312 lbs.capacity and the demensions are:

43.2W
36.2H
26.75D

Good luck!

Thats what i was looking at.. Given that i will be giving some away and donating some as well... Because 2.5 gay men can't eat that much meat befre it goes bad.... (me, my roommate and his bf, who doesnt live here but eats here)

Wonder if i'd be better to off to order said freezer below online from sears and find a cheap used fridge... Craigslist here is scarce with cheap fridges... And ordering online seems better than going into a sears store as the delivery times are quicker

Hmmm...
Thats not bad either...

I really want fridge space, even though we have a big fridge, theres more beer and juice and water taking up food space (oh and wine, 4 bottels i know of open)

SO i may just have to break down and buy both..If i could find a small mini fridge only i'd love that..That would rock..

Theres the americana at homo depot.. With my friends employee discount and such..He said i can get it for $300 delivered tommrow

Personally, I dislike chest freezers. I had one and when it is full it is a pain to try and get something out of the bottom of the freezer. And it is really difficult to keep track of what is in the freezer because everything is just thrown in, no matter how neat you try to keep everything. I got rid of mine and purchased an upright freezer. Much easier to see what is in the freezer.

Non-frost free is better in terms of longevity of life for a deep-freeze unit. Without the fan in the cooling compartment there is much less incidence of freezer-burn.

A once-every-two-years cleaning and defrosting helps one take iventory and rotate stock.

If you are inclined to buy/obtain a fridge/frezer combo, be mindful of its placement. If to go in an unheated /uncooled space (garage/basement,attic) the main control/thermostat should be in the FREEZER. [i.e. the one with the "OFF" position]. The other control is often just a damper that regualated flow of cooled air between compartments. Problem is the frrefrigerator is often satisfied before the freezer and you stored frozen goods may defrost or be over-cooled when the unit itself is not in a climate-controlled indoor lkiving space.

So for 100 lbs of meat (say 45.5kg) that is at least $3 per pound, it may make sense for a unit that is freezer, only.

chest freezers

I prefer them over the uprights because they're easier to use and a whole lot more energy efficient. The frost free uprights have more cases of freezer burn and dry foods out from the constant forced flow of dry, cold air.As soon as you open their door, all the cold air flows out.If you rotate your stock and write the product and the date you put it in the freezer, there's less confusion and loss of different items. Most of the newer models have the slip and slide baskets that make organizing a lot easier.

Small Chest

Sam' and Costco both sell small chest freezers for around $120.00. One is GE and the other is Whirlpool. Yes they are light and that is testamony to new technologies. For an extra $100 you can get the same in an upright at Sears. Sears typically has a scratched and dented store whre there are deeper savings.

Also a Fridge Freezer more often than not is not going to be able to maintain the -20degC temps needed to store food long term.

In our chest Freezer, I keep 80 homemade frozen lunches of different varieties on hand, plus around 20kg of meat at any time. Meat stored in freezer bags is usually good for up to 18 months before the freezer burn sets in.

My mother in law stores meat in the freezer part of her fridge, after she's been in hospital 6 months, we just bought it all back to our place for us to eat and all of it was badly freezer burnt. The meet was only 6 months old as we bought it just prior to her going into hospital.

If you're aiming to store food long term you need a dedicated Freezer, preferabley not frost free. My chest freezer is not frost free and with it being opened 2-3 times a day, I get a good 2 years before I get half an inch of ice and need to defrost.

To get around the not being able to find things, I sort.

Frozen lunches stack on the left hand side and on the right. Meat sits in the middle under the basket in a cardboard box for easy removal. Frozen Veg, Ice cream and Frozen deserts sit in the basket where they are easily accessible. The stuff I use every day goes in the Freezer compartment of the fridge.

With chest freezers it is still a lot more difficult to find something that is at the bottom of the freezer, covered by items on top of it. I had the sliding baskets also. I am a very organized person and still with just my ex partner and I in the house but with him constantly adding/removing from the freezer it was impossible to keep track of what was in there. And unless you are fastidious about keeping track of the inventory every time you add or remove an item, or if other people are adding/removing items from the freezer and not updating the inventory then that inventory list soon becomes useless. Also, defrosting and cleaning the chest freezers are a real pain. I much prefer the upright. Just my opinion.
