No, not the GE, thank goodness! It's doing very well even with this high heat and humidity!

This is in the upstairs kitchen. We just pulled out the old Sub-Zero that had been a problem and was unused for maybe 6-7 years. Now we have to put in a new fridge where this one was built-in. It's a 36" wide by 24" deep cabinet. We found a great fridge with very good reviews and a good price, but it's about 32" deep so it'll stick out 8" from the existing cabinet (Kitchen Aid KBFS22EWMS).

To go with something significantly less deep, we'll have to either go high end or bargain basement. Neither is really an option.

We did find a Sub-Zero locally, used but in great condition. I've written the seller to ask the history of it, but also looked it up online. It's a model 550 in s/s. Seems SZ in general isn't exactly the consumer's favorite and has a history of repair issues. However, diplotop.com (http://diplo-best.com/review/SUB-ZERO/550) supposedly has 335 reviews of this model and it comes in at about a 7 out of 10.

So, does anyone have any experience with the SZ 550? Or any other ideas for a more shallow fridge?

Thanks,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Saw that you called...............unfortunatly I have no experience with Sub-Zero, but do know that they have a not so great repair record. I thought the Kitchenaid you were looking at was a good price for a counter depth, which it wasn't. The one you are looking at is 15+ years old, and for the price....I don't know what to tell you. I know they are expensive to buy new. Counter depth refrigerators used are hard to find, so maybe you should jump on it, especially where it's local. Let me know what you decide.

I love the look of French-door refrigerators, but doing food prep for a party at a friend's house recently halted any notion of putting one in my kitchen. I found it very annoying to deal with two doors when handling big platters and bowls, with both doors wanting to close on me all the time. Someone mentioned this in another thread and I was rather dismissive---until I had to work with one.

Stodgy as they are, I'm sticking with the classic single-door fridge.

What I'd like if I had the room: A full-width all-fridge and upright freezer side-by-side in the kitchen. Here's one Frigidaire has on offer:

Best Ref to replace a 36" Sub-Zero

Would be a 36" Built-In SZ or KA, the 550s are good overall as are the KAs. I would diffidently consider a SXS as you have the 34" GE that can hold 4 party platters already. The SXSs are more covenant to use overall and are more reliable.

If one of you want to call me I can offer additional advice, but with the normal give and take in making a decision like this it takes too long to do in this type of forum and the end result if often not as good.
