Okay. Once again I have examined the offerings of steam irons on the market. Anyone have any opinions on the Reliable brand of irons and/or steam generators?

I really need to get over it and buy something already...

Malcolm

Ive had a Reliable iron for about a year now. It's the Digital Velocity v100. The iron features a steam generator, so you can use steam at the silk setting and not get any leaking. This iron produces a hefty amount of steam, even on the lower settings.
I sew as my main hobby, and have been through a number of irons. This one replaced my all time favourite and now nla Krups. It's so much better than the overrated Rowntas. I've had three and each one leaked or spit water onto fabric at the worst possible time. The Reliable never has.
This iron is on the expensive side, but I recommend it. It's performance is worth it.

Review

Thanks for the review. It is unfortunate that the reviews online are so diverse. Seems that every iron you look at has a handful of scathing reviews that make you want to run the other way. But for some reason, I do keep looking at this model and am very close to pulling the trigger.

I have this one - steam generator. Awesome! I've never had steam like this before.

Remember, those who have had less-than-expected experiences with products are far more likely to post a review online than those who have had no trouble and never bother to even look at the website again, if ever.

Digital Velocity v100

That iron (Digital Velocity v100) looks pretty cool Malcolm.

I don't know of any store that carries them so you can see and feel one in person.
It looks like a big iron from watching this video.

She also talks about it's features.

Best of luck with you decision.

The v100 is a hefty iron, reminiscent of the old ge's of the sixties and seventies. Which I like, I use a lot of cotton and linen fabrics, the weight helps do some of the work. The large amount of steam does the rest. These are popular irons with sewers and quilters, you may find one at a fabric, quilt or sewing machine shop, for a look see.
Gansky1, I've been coveting that one. Have a Bernina one that I never bonded with, can't add water until it cools down and it's kind of clunky. Yours looks sleek and efficient.

Iron Maven

I knew some club member would have an IM.

Question: How long is the hose/cord between the base and the iron head? It looks awfully short in the website pix.

Malcolm

Cord Length...

Malcolm...
Amazon rates the cord length at 8 1/5 feet.
Another site rates it at 8.2 feet.

So just over 8 feet.

The anti scale replacement cartridge (2 pack) goes anywhere from $16.95 to $29.95.

I don't know how long they last and if you have hard water they may need to be changed more frequently.
(that's the only thing I don't like, one more thing to buy and keep on hand).

Here's a quick snap of the hose-cord length. I've never found it to be too short, usually while using it, the ironing table is positioned closer to the base unit and it still reaches all the way to the end and more. It's cloth covered so it slides easily and doesn't hang up or snag on what you're ironing.

I don't have a problem with scale build-up, etc., so far... I have softened water in the house so I buy purified drinking water to use in the IM and I don't use it all the time so this isn't a hardship. I use distilled water in my GE steam iron.

The steam generator is a great iron, very hot and constant, strong steam. It's great if you're doing a lot of ironing all at one time. To use as a daily, quick press on the run iron, this wouldn't be your first choice. The steam generator takes about 10+ minutes or so to build up to full, working pressure. This goes by quickly while you're prepping the ironing, making a gin & tonic, etc. :-) Separate controls allow you to use only the iron without steam. Parts are available for most of the unit's main components and it looks as though the basic parts haven't changed in the four years or so I've had mine. New iron handle-grips, water tanks, etc. are all a few clicks away if you need them.

(The ironing "table" is simply a wooden top that fits over a standard ironing board and covered with a Teflon material. My mother's cousin makes them and sells them at craft & quilt shows, etc. I love the large working space, but it's damn heavy!)

Well...

That answers my next question. Did you get the ironing table?

I decided to order the v100. I should have it on Wednesday. Now I want the C88 vacuum table to go with it. May order it after I get the iron. I can always pass the v100 on to my sister and get the maven at a later date.

Hi Malcolm. I think you should consider and take a look at the Rotary Iron Model B 990E from Miele. When I was at Miele in Princeton a few weeks ago they gave me a demo. Let me tell you, a mans shirt was done in no time at all. Sheets, pillow cases would be a breeze. Check it out.

Have Several Ironers

Shirts can be done quickly if one has the movements down pat. However as no ironer sold in the US past or present produces steam, one has to dry iron dampened items.

Some actually prefer the body that comes from ironers versus hand ironing for shirts. Others find the cat-whiskers and creases made by all but the most experienced user not worth the bother.

Miele's latest ironer seems much less solid than their previous offerings, IMHO. But then again that is just what I say.

Reliable Brand

Seems to be one of those makers persons either love or hate, depending upon their experiences.

Reliable seems to try and bridge a gap between quasi-professional and high end domestic user. Some sewers/quilters have purchased their steam boiler iron systems and were less than thrilled. They were even less happy with both repair and customer service.

Reviews

I'll post my review after I have had some time with it. The procter silex I have now started leaking several years ago which impaired its performance. I suspect I will like the Velocity.

Received

Got my iron today. Used it to iron 4 shirts and a pair of dockers. So far, this baby kicks out some wicked steam. Even at the regular steam setting.

Ironing goes so much easier with an adequate amount of steam...

I'm pretty impressed!

Irons UK

HI I use a Laurastar its good but geting it serviced is a pain the 1st one I had kept braking down but I managed to get Harrods to deal with LS and they replaced it, and so far ( about 2 years ) and its been no problem. It makes ironing very easy as the board has a vacuum fan sorry done have a pic right now. I am sure they are also sold in the US. We also have a Phaff steam roller for bedding ect that fantastic. but I must say most of the time I send the dedding to the ironing shop as I just don't have the time at the moment.
