Received the ElectroHygiene vac that Veg-OMatic found in a swap shop near his place.--Set it up,did some cleaning and replaced the belt.The person that had it last --lots of blonde hair wrapped around the roller brush.Cleaned it off-and that vac works GREAT!Thanks Veg-O-Matic for finding it.Was well packed and arrived without a scratch.Has an unusual feature that royal vacs usually don't have-a cord pigtail connector for the cord on the motor on the machine.Nice touch-make it easy to replace a worn cord.Been taking the machine for a several spins around its new home-and its great.-Lots of other machines to keep it company.

I too had an EH,it was really a Royal 880,only red .The pigtail cord was so you could detach the big handle,then put a small handle on it like a Kirby,but instead of folding the bag over,you'd also put a small cloth bag on to make it a hand vac.Add the hose and voila!a "tank-type" cleaner.BTW,I loved it.A quiet,well made "fun" vacuum.

I don't have a camera-and when I get one-putting the pictures from the camera into the computer I am using.I would like to show the machine and its friends!There would be a lot of'em!
What year is it? Oh I shouldn't poke fun, I don't have a cellphone.. LOL
The owners book was printed 4-85-figure that must be pretty close to when the machine was built.-On the back of the book they show the Kirby like hand vac handle and small bag.that small bag would be handy!!The "pile Lifter" brushroll would be nicew as well-beleive Royal still carries those.The Royal dealer here mentioned the Pile Lifter brush as one of the only attachments still available other than the hose and hand tools.At that point it seemed like Royal,Electro-Hygiene was trying to compete with Kirby-and doing a pretty good job.These attachments-electroHygiene calles the #368 kit-gets you the hand vac handle,small bag,and pile brush.Would be nice if they still had those today.Did Electro-Hygiene sell the Royal "Prince"?-Would think the Electro-Hygiene hand vac would be a competitor.

Not to my recollection.BTW,I personally,generally like EHs and Royals of yesteryear FAR more than Kirbys.Those 3 amp.machines were quiet,easy to push and maneuver,yet due to the curved fan blades,moved high volumes of air.On very thick carpets,they had trouble however,due to a less-than-aggresive single row brushroll.If you added a double-brush roll,not with stiffeners else it would balk,the cleaning power goes way,way up.

I like both classes of machines Kirby-and the Royal electro Hygiene machines.The 3A Royals are very good-but I feel the Kirbys outclass them.Now with the 6-8A motors in the Royals-and thew brush stiffeners-they are equal to Kirbys.The 3A machines are pretty amazing though-they can outclean most 12A clean air vacs sold today!!The Traditional-or direct air vacs should get the "energy Star" rating.The 12A units are powerhogs!!Sadly brush stiffener rolls will overheat 3A motors.As you point out the double brush rolls will work better.

Royals,but the Royals are better in other areas,and on low nap carpets are just fine.On a thick plush,I would not bother with the old Royals,except with double brushes,they don't have enough oomph.I did have an EH with a plush nap but the carpet was brand new,so no deep-down dirt to get out.I love the quietness,old fashioned look,and lightness of it.

It's really the only way to do it. All the carpeting in my house is plush, and the original brushroll couldn't handle it....
lol it bogs down on low speed somewhat. Can't run it too long like that with that roller in it.
Here's a pic of mine. All this vacuum talk has got me all fiesty! I'm gonna give my rugs the Royal treatment.

David-Really nice EH.Remember seeing those lined up in neat rows at Star Vacuum in Wash DC area in the 60's and 70's-later in the 70's when I had a job-should have bought one-wasn't as interested in vacs as I am now.The one I have Says "Supreme" on it as well.Does anyone out there know when "Electro Hygiene" started and when it ended?I am figuring Royal built the machines for them-did EH submit designs and specs to Royal?Would almost love it if the EH name and designs could be resurrected today.

as i understand, *royal* and *electro-hygiene* are the same people. i think something about royal was only sold in stores and electro-hygiene was only sold door to door. a guru would know more about this. i LOVE the Electro-Hygiene name! dates from an era when electricity and hygiene were exciting concepts for many people. if i had to guess, i would say the EH name stopped being used by royal in the 70s?
As little as I know I heard they were one and the same as well. The tank model like I have does have a little hopper on the front end where the hose connects in which you can add pellets of some kind, moth crystals, fragrance ? Same concept as Hoover put on some of its uprights for holding a small fragrance tab. Does the upright have this?
