We had one of these...

Until 1962 when my Dad traded this beast in for a 1962 Starfire.

The Speedometer changed colors . Sort of like a Norge Timw Line. The Speedometer changed colors. It went from 1-35 was green. 40 through 55 was Orange. (I think) For sure 60 through 75 was Red. 80 through 90 was Yellow. and after that above 90 was Black.

Same photo but...

Look at the Steering Column. Painted Steel. All the Chrome on the Heat Selector. To the left is a 4 Key Panel (Push Button) that was Titled "Summer Ventilation". Which was a Vacuum Switch that opened 2 Left and Right Side vents under the Dash and let the Air blast through. (What ever Temperature was Outside).

What a hunk of steel indeed! Wow. What a gorgeous example of a fine automobile. Olds made some beautiful cars back then.

My favorite is the 58 88. Gosh what an big rear end... erm, good designed rear end. ;)

Talk about a design change in 1 year!

Hell yes I remember! Dear old Dad bought a 1959 98 Holiday Sedan. Dear Bro decided to see if the power vent window was strong enough to crush a pencil. It wasn't. Dad was not happy. It got traded in on a 61 Chrysler New Yorker. Terrible car but what a cool dash board! And then came the 62 black StarFire convertable with red interior. God, what a great car. Dear Bro used to take it to the races in Daytona and never mentioned to Dad that he was actually racing it on the beach (and making $$ doing it!). That got traded in on a 64 StarFire and the fun was over.

My Mom used to run this car from New Jersey to the Cape at 75-85 MPH. We had to Stop about 3-4 times for Fuel!!!

Keep in mind the engine was probably cranking out 4,000 RPM's at 85MPH!

Gawd, I love a car with "wings". (midwest term for vent windows, I believe) Mother had a 1963 Pontiac Tempest that was da coolest Mom car ever! She retired it in 1979, oblivious to my begging to save it for me the next year.

Eddy i do remember these fine old cars. One of the Lincoln Continentals in the early to mid 70's had the "time line", rolling indicator on the speedometer. My uncle had one. alr2903

Tom!

Wow, what ever possessed your dad to buy a '61 New Yorker? Those MoPar boats looked way dated compared to what Olds (and everybody else except maybe Rambler) was offering for 1961.

Still, I'm jealous that you had so many new cars pass through the household. We went almost 10 years between cars, from a '57 Lincoln Premiere to a '67 Olds Delmont 88. That one had the 425 and could really move since it was way lighter than any of its predecessors that had the 455.

Family friends had the '59 Bonneville. That car seemed like it was a mile long! GM put enough brightwork on their late 50's lineup to make the Folsom Street Fair look tame.

Those "timeline" speedos Oldsmobile used always interested me. One uncle had a '61 and the other a '62. Their speedos were way more entertaining than just your average "Queen for a Day" needle arrangement.

Thanks for posting the pix Eddie!

Olds Engines!

49-53...303 CID, 54-56...324 CID 57-58 ...371 cid,59-64...394CID...65-67 ...425 CID..68- 455CID, Some Dynamic 88s and Jetstar 88s used different sizes, as for gas mileage, they really were not too bad, thru 56 they would get about 18 to 20 on the road, the 57-59 would get about 16 or 17 , I had a 63 Starfire , it would get about 15 or so if you took it easy, but the best Olds I ever had was a 65 Ninety Eight, it was geared 2.91, and would get between 18-20 on a trip, plus it would do almost 100 in passing gear,it would do almost 60 in low,I was about 20 when I had it so it got rough treatment! never a problem, the 63 was fast...if you could keep the tranny in it, 61-64 used a AWFUL thing known as a Slim Jim, positively TERRIBLE,My favorite cars though..Chrysler! Once you drive a pushbutton Torqueflite with full time power steering....I did and NEVER bought a GM product again, still, I like the old stuff!

Kevin, I loved the "COLD" light on the dash. I would nag Dad not to rev the engine until it went off. Also the split ac/heat controls, w/ ac on left, heat on right. Great over-engineering! Do I remember the upper right side of the dash lighting up? And of course, our 98 had the chrome trimmed pedals! Even my Cadillac doesn't have those today. And don't get me started on the floor controlled "Wonder Bar" radio w/ reverb and power antenna that YOU could control. Damn, I miss those days.
Dad totaled the 64 StarFire and replaced it with a 64 98 Lux Sedan in deep green with matching brocade and a cruise control! I was in heaven! I used to set the "speed monitor" buzzer, which DD never noticed till it went off and so did he!

Yes, the right side of the dash did light up - mine had a clock there (which never kept the right time!). Other than that, the Dynamic 88 was BOL and had few options. Just the same, it had a 371 engine and was fun to cruise around in. I really loved the look of the GM hardtops for 59 and 60, especially the wrap around rear window on the four-door hard tops. I sold the Olds to a guy who "just had to have it" - so it went to a good home. Now, I have a 1964 Dodge, which I love because it was made the same year as I was!!
