I would like to remove my agitator from my 1-year-old SQ, just to clean underneath. Then I read this statement in the manual:

"The agitator should not be removed except for service. The washtub is designed to be self cleaning."

Seriously? Has anyone ever removed an agitator on any machine, and found a perfectly clean tub? Knowing how difficult it can be to lift up a SQ agitator, should I risk breaking it, and having SQ say, "I told you so"? I do have the 10-year warranty.

Removing a SQ Agitator

Hi Fred, You can remove it every once in a while if you want, it takes a really firm tug [ and be careful not to let it hit you in the face ] when it pops free.

SQ is correct that the tub is self-cleaning and there should be no reason to remove it, but if you are getting any build-up at all you should change your laundry habits to prevent the build up, generally people use way too little detergent which results in a mineral build-up.

Removed and Cleaned

There was a slight buildup of soap scum underneath the agitator. While I was there, I removed each bolt holding the stainless drum, and put oil on the threads before screwing back in. Don't want those bolts to get corroded into place.
