Removing agitator

Bit of a novice here: We have a Whirlpool "thin twin", and it's not getting all the lint out properly. I think the filter(s) may be dirty or clogged, and understand they can be located at the bottom of the agitator. How do I remove the agitator?

Your agitator is a two-piece thingie. (teh actual agittion fines will remain behind, in the machine. Simply pull up on the main "barrel" It comes off VERY easily. You will see a fine-mesh lint screen at the bottom of the "barrel".

I tried to remove the agitator from the bottom, but gave much resistance. Do the moving fins come off as well?

Pull from the top.

If you want to take the whole agitator out, there is an agitator screw that secures the agitator to the agitator shaft which much be removed first. You will need a socket driver with an extension on most direct drive machines to do this.

Be careful not to damage the seal on the screw, and be sure to re-install it properly as this seal is very important in keeping the centerpost dry on all DD machines.

I don't think the "thin twin" is a direct drive. At least the one I just picked up isn't.

It depends on how old the TT is. The original one is belt drive. You would know you have a belt drive because the lint filter is located at the 1 o'clock position on the tub cover. And the filter is usually missing or damaged.

now..... there are two different DD TT. One is a Thin Twin, 24in wide, the SUPER Thin Twin is 27 inches wide. The Super TT has a dual action agitator. The 24in wide TT should (unless someone has changed it or screwed the top of the agitator to the bottom) have a 2 piece agitator with the filter in the bottom of the barrel. Simply put your hands around the barrel like you are going to choke your um, mother in law and pull up. Turn the barrel over and you'll see the lint clogged filter. Clean it and replace the barrel. Make sure you push the barrel firmly onto the bottom of the agitator or it will come off during spin.

sounds like a dumb design. do they TELL customers to pull their agitator out to clean it? otherwise it's pointless.

It actually worked quite well. Better than what the ' new and improved' self cleaning filter is. Yes, it's in the owners manual to clean the filter.

On a side note..... if any one of you get a chance to pull the agitator out on a direct drive made in the last 4 years notice the 4, then 2 round rubber and plastic plugs under the agitator with 3 fingers sticking out ( if they haven't fallen apart and been flushed down the drain).....that is the new lint filter. Yes, its a joke, but if you dry everything in the dryer and sort properly to begin with you don't need a lint filter in the washer anyway.
