I have been watching for a KDS of the 16 to 18 vintage for some time without success. Can anyone tell me whether it would be a mistake to get this one in the meantime. Thank you....

For $50.00 you can't go wrong. I bought this one for my daughter and her family and they loved it. It's very quiet and cleans well. Be sure the tube to the upper rack is well seated so it opens the flange for the water to come through.

I'm not familiar with that model but I would go with what Kelly says.
I don't check the Bay Area CL ads on a regular basis for appliances, but even so I have seen a number of vintage KA dishwashers there. Keep checking for the one you really want. I found my ISE Classic Supreme (same as KA Superba except lacks sanitizing option) in Redwood City for $35 and within a couple of weeks an identical machine turned up in Gilroy for $25. I bought both, one is in my kitchen performing well and am keeping one as a spare. I don't think either of them had a heading that indicated the brand name.
If you narrow your search to something like between $5 and $75 you'll weed out a lot of the newer machines.

I don't think you could go wrong with this machine. It is one of the best of the newer Whirlpool lineup. It should do the job well.

I have to agree with the idea that you won't be too unhappy with the model advertised especially for the asking price. A few caveats you need to b e aware of...
It is a tall tub machine and is a whirlpool clone of course. It is much quieter than any Kitchenaid before the first WP clones but don't expect it to throw water around the inside like your old machine!
If the owner's book is correct, that model has the non height adjustable top rack but has the fold down pegs which allow more freedom of loading in the top rack than the fixed pegs. My Mom has the WP 1055 model and it has the fixed pegs in the top and it has a hard time fitting any slightly wider than normal cups or glasses on the outer sections of the rack so you will be able to wiggle the larger ones in with your rack.
I broke down and installed a KUDP02IRWH2 last october and have to say that it is not a bad machine at all once you get used to it. My wife still wants her older KA back but I keep stalling her. This one is so much quieter. Mine has the height adjustable upper rack and the dual line of drop down pegs in the bottom rack. Neither of which my wife has ever utilized. I have but she never has!
I have to say that I was less than impressed with the 4 way Hydrosweep arm these have as they are actually narrower than the Whirlpool arms and it did a crappy job on the silverware and anything in the corners. There was a big difference in results when I put in the Whirlpool arm. It has jets that shoot the corners better and while it lacks the single center jet of the KA arm, it more than makes up for that shortcoming.
Your machine measures soil in the water using a pressure switch and mine uses an optical sensor to adjust wash and rinse times.The optical sensor definitely works better as I have often heard it drain water and refill before the actual rinse segments and the Kenmore I have as a spare in the garage still cleans very well and it uses the pressure switch setup. If I have heard it purge the water 3 or 4 times in 4 years, it would be alot!
Do youself one favor, though, if you get this machine.
Run it on hi temp wash as much as you can. The results will be remarkably better than not using it. As well as my machine cleans, it really cleans better on the higher temp setting as it runs a bit longer and gives most detergents I use a good chance to clean and scrub everything. But you can experiment with what works best for you.
You should check the pump area below the filter in the tank as they often clog up with debris that people dont scrape off the dishes before loading. We are being force fed that we can put everything into our dishwashers and that is not really true. Yes, the enzymes need food to eat but you would be amazed at what you may find in someone else's machine. I have rescued and resold at least 3 machines now that people said did not work well or were told by servicers that they needed pumps and all that was wrong was that the pumps were clogged up!
Check it before you install it.
If you call Whirlpool or Kitchenaid, they can email you the actual USe and Care Guide whioch for some reason are not available online for your machine which was also the case with the model I had. I had to wait til I opened the box and installed the machine before I had the actual manual. I had the emailed copy long before i installed it.
