I have the AWN432. Wondering if it's possible to change out the control panel and "upgrade" the 432 to a 542. Am I crazy? Where could I get the control panel? Would it be worth it?

He's right rwindiana

a totally different timer.

Also see my channel, I put up another vid of the Speed Queen carrying the freight.

rwindiana:

Are you asking for just being able to swap the panel graphics out OR are you asking to take a complete AWN542 control panel (including timer, speed setting, water level, and wash temp as well as extra rinse controls) and putting that on your AWN432?

Seems to me swapping a complete control panel could be done, but it would require some wiring surgery.

The 432 has the 2 speed motor. I would think that for manufacturing ease this would not be a huge effort.

just my 2 cents.

Changing From A 432 to a 542

You would need a control panel, timer, cycle switch, one extra knob and a complete wiring harness, I would guess it would cost you around $200+ depending whether you can buy parts at retail or dealer cost. There is little functional advantage in doing the switch, as a dealer we sell the 412 ten to one compared to both the 432 and 542 combined, it will still be the same washer when you are done.

Now if someone really wants to upgrade their SQ washer I do have the florescent light assembly from an Amana TOL washer, it just screws on and you only have to connect two wires to make it work, I put one on my SQ FL washer a few years ago. I will sell the assembly for $70+shipping.

Hmm, well the main feature I would want to add is the ability to do a "gentle" wash aside from the handwash cycle. Perhaps I could just add a switch in a wire somewhere? I might try to figure out how to mod this thing. :)

Im thinking, all you would need is the whole control panel and upper wiring harness. The wiring harness has a plug the connects the upper panel half and the lower water valve motor half.

Alright, I devised a work-around that works great for my family. A simple switch installed on the back of the control panel to switch from "normal" to "gentle". Which is a bit of a misnomer, since on the handwash cycle the motor will be running on high instead of low! But as seldom as the handwash cycle is used, I don't foresee that being a problem at all.

However I had a safety question: I'm not sure exactly how the speed switching on this motor works, but I assume it would be bad to switch the speed during operation. Can anyone confirm this? I ask because if it is something I need not worry about then I don't want to worry about it. :)

Switching Motor Speed When Motor Is Running

Will not hurt a thing, millions of TL washers have been made over the years where the user can change the speed at any time and also during the coerce of many washer cycles the timer also changes the motors speed while running.

Even on the GE FFs mechanical multi-speed clutch machines you can switch speeds all you want with no harm to the washer.
