As promised a few months back, I've been slowly but surely writing new code to the Discuss-O-Mat to add a new feature to help report any possible offensive posts. I've just uploaded the code and while I've tested it there still could be a bug or two so if you notice anything strange please email me ([email protected]) asap and report it.

I've deleted very few posts over the years. I plan to keep it that way, but sometimes I'm not around and if something is really bad (such as the idiot who posted that disgusting racist photo last summer) I want members to be able to help out. You will notice in the blue bar on the far right is a new link that says "Report this post to webmaster". The way it works is if you click that you will be brought to a confirmation screen (just to be sure it wasn't clicked by accident). Once you press the confirm button the system will register the post within the thread as being a possible offensive post. If 7 different members click on the link the system will automatically remove the text in the post and the system will email me and let me know. Once I get this email I will check out what was posted and if I decide it was offensive I will keep that text/link/picture of the post deleted. If I think that it wasn't really offensive I will restore the posting to its original state and remove the Report button so it wont happen again.

Now I'm not stupid and I realize that this functionality could be susceptible to abuse so I've taken great strides to prevent the same person from being able to click the report button on the same post more than one time. I check three things to make sure (as much as technically possible) that its not the same person over and over.

Questions/Comments?

Wonderful. Do we get to know who is ultra-sensitive and a button-psuher to see if they need to be voted off the island?
(No, not Manhattan, dear! LOL).

Imagine? One dozen false alarms and you too can get banned for life! HA!

Robert you are the greatest and I trust your judgement blind. I guess that is a close as one gets to unconditional love between friends, huh?

I can just picture having some Bible-thumper from the boonies have 6 of their friends sign up and going to town!

Oh please do feel free to email me ALL banned and offensive posts including the racist photo. Thank you. LOL

Interesting Robert. I "reported" both your first thread and Jamies and commented right below Jamies post above.. then I went back and "reported" your thread again and now my original post following Jamies is gone

Oh honey dont blame ME for showing up and all hell breaks loose! *FEH*

Sometimes you have to pull out and go back in to refresh your screen.

I think Serena

may be playful at times...

Seriously, Robert, I am sorry you have had to take this step. The mere existence of similar functions on many blogs seems to curtail most of the worst of the offensiveness.

I, personally, won't be pulling the trap-door on anyone except for racists and their ilk, and really hope last summer's nastiness was the very last.

Thanks for your hard work.

Do I have to beg?

Ok so in 25 minutes I can only get 4 people to read my thread and report my post to webmaster? Hmmmph! I need three more unique members to click on "" on post #404645 (three posts above this one)!

Don't make me use bad language ;-)

Just got home from work, and read your post Robert. Count me as "clicked" <:

Boom Boom Gone

Yay ding ding.

The number seven might be a bit high, but lets see how this works "in the field" so to speak. It's certainly open to design changes.

Thanks for your help guys!!!!

Robert, would a simple exclamation point (plus rollover text) suffice, instead of ""? It's standard on most forums I've seen, and would take headers back to a single line instead of two.

I like

being a unique bitch, yay! I was the firstest unique bitch to click!
Personally, I think seven is a good number. It is too high for someone who just doesn't like someone else (not that we have anything but marshmallow creme love here) to click them away.
It is low enough that a real misuse can be zapped quite fast - I don't think Friday afternoon traffic really counts as heavy around here.

Two lines???

Hi Jeff, strange on every computer I tested this on the header stayed at as a one liner. What is your screen resolution??

I might have to adjust the column widths then because I do want the header to be only one line. I want to make it obvious at least at first as to what the link is.

Robert, I'm running at 1280x1024, and my browser window is about 3/4" less than full screen. If I maximize the window, headers revert to a single line.

Maybe we can get Robert to add a "Like" button similar to Facebook.

If there was one, Greg, I would have pushed it for that last comment of yours. :-)

Would you mister? hmmmmmph

I'm reporting Greg's post to our webmaster

Robert, this function is great!

My suggestion is also a button "delete my own post".

Many times we can make some mistakes (wrong file or video or link added to the post) and we notice it only AFTER the preview was confirmated and posted.

The "like" button, just like Facebook would be fine too

Maybe someday we could also have our own version of Farmville... The Laundryville LOL.
Instead of carrots and pumpkins, we could seed and harvest washing machines LOL.
People would spend a lot on green coins to buy the Frigidaire and Apex seeds (after level 200000 is reached, of course)
Up to level 1000, only modern washing machine seeds would available (a farm full of Danby portables).

Delete your own post??

Hey Robert

That would be a great idea- I know ive had to mail you to remove a "post in haste" reply and im sure im not the only one :)

Goodness,

All the demands we place on Robert!
Maybe we should all just be thankful that he provides this site to us, free of cost and permits us free reign.

No, this isn't a personal attack on anyone here making requests. Robert posted half a page on how much he'd rather update pictures and the virtual museum than do this -

Personally, I hope we never again have anything so offensive that it is even necessary.
