Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I think there was a thread a while back on the iron content of "stainless steel" which comes in different forms and made by different processes. I wonder if WK always used the same manufacturing process, materials, etc. in their line or if, in later years, they changed to materials of lesser quality...

Where's John Lefever when you need him??

I'm pretty sure my dad bought our 1959/1960 Waste King because he perceived it a KitchenAid alternative. It had a filtering system. I honestly think it held more than a KA of the time. Racking was a bit more flexible too as far as I was concerned. The top racks were similar shaped in both. Dinner plates went down the center. They also fit along the sides. One distinction the WK had over a Superba of the day was the final rinse water was heated to 150 or higher on Full Cycle. It also did a suds kill flush between the main wash & first rinse. Intent was not only suds kill, but to purge water line to bring hot water to machine before first rinse fill. It's the same dishwasher as shown in the only Waste King POD that's offered. You do get to see a glimpse of loading from the partially open door. This is a Christmas ad for both the dishwasher and garbage disposer.

Bob - was it made of stainless steel back then? I know at one point they were made of porcelain enamel of some such material, maybe in the late 50's or early 60's. Some had only a single wash arm, no tower or middle wash arm like the later models had.

I think you put it right when you mentioned your dad viewed these as a KitchenAid alternative...I think many people did because they were much less expensive for a long time. Like KitchenAid, their technology changed very little over the years, just some design/cycle changes. KitchenAid's design at least offered some loading flexibility via it's adjustable upper rack, which Waste King never offered.

I had the SS888 model growing up. It was with us from 1981 until 2002, and never had any problems except for an inlet hose giving way causing a flood. It was the best dishwasher we had.

A funny coincidence:
My aunt's WK flooded her kitchen the same day ours did. Unfortunately, I don't remember whether or not it was an inlet hose.

Have a good one,
James
