This was my Grandmother Powells hand written recipe..She despised mixes of any kind!
1 cup sugar
4 TBSP flour
1 tsp corn starch
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs separated
2 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp vanilla
bananas
vanilla wafers
Combine sugar flour, starch and salt, blend in egg yolks until a paste is formed, then add milk, cook stirring constantly until smooth and thick over medium heat, dont hurry it, it scorches easily, add vanilla, cool slightly,..layer wafers, bananas " sliced thin, "Grandmother sliced hers length wise, but I dont," and pudding, when all is used make a merangue of the egg whites and 4 tbsp of sugar, spread over pudding and brown at 375..about 8 to 10 minutes. Ron Jones came to visit a few weeks ago and I made this, he loved it!

You Left Something Out, Hans :)

For people who aren't from the South and haven't lived there, you probably would call banana pudding "banana pudding."

As everyone who has lived South of the Mason-Dixon Line knows, it's pronounced "nanner puddin'."

And you don't "drink iced tea" with it - you "drank ahs tee."

Being a born and bread Marylander, I hate to say it just goes to hell in a hand basket from here on south of the mason dixon line.
Start off with some Baltimorese and your on your way. Just the Highlandtown dialect alone is enough to put your teeth on edge. My parents were from that neck of the woods and thank the almighty stars above it never managed to gain hold in their vocabulary repetoire.
And whenever I'm asked I proudly say that I am from BALT-I-MORE. Although for some it's sadly they're either from BAWLMER, HON! or they're on vacation DOWNEY OCEAN HON!

Just make sure you pay close attention and hope you understand the misguided soul.

now how's bout' sum nana puddin' hon? I'll be sur to put the bowl in the zinc when I git done wit it!

And now to get back to the pudding recipes---------------

BTW the recipe sounds delicious! ;)

Bawlmer! That still makes me laugh; my family and I moved to Harford county from New Mexico in '88, so I've never quite picked up the accent (my parents are both from New England), but when I moved to Connecticut, no one could understand me.

I do like the phrase 'All y'all' though. It makes me smile.

In some areas of Baltimore the Baltimorese is so prevalent that it can make you wonder if you're in another country. So yes you can feel safe that you don't have to worry about some bimbo with a beehive or blue eye shadow (lord help us) in spiked heels "askin ya fer a light fer her smoke" (i'm going to the extreme) chasing after you in Havre de Grace.
But any area that you live in will have its little inflections on how they speak and we adapt to them for the most part. It's all just apples, oranges, or peaches depending on where you are. (although some use rotten fruit) ;)

Now let's get back to that NANA PUDDIN HON! :)

That sounds really good.

But I can't drink milk.  Dare I ask if anyone has tried this with Almond or Soy Milk?  I would use an Unsweetned, Unflavored version.  I find in many recipes I can substitue these for regular milk just don't know about this one.

And I live in the south Y'all!!  I remember when I first moved here from Chicago.  I heard stuff I never heard before.  I might could try this recipe if any Yuns think it's a good ideal to make the substitute.

Yes you can use the soy milk for the milk in the recipe.  I have a cousin that is lactose intolerant and uses the soy for pudding and cream pies.

I guess..

It would work ok, until I was 5 or 6 years old, I drank Goats milk!!! I was allergic to regular milk, thankfully I out grew that!! I use organic milk, I do not use skim or 2 % that stuff is terrible to me!!better yet on cereal is half and half!!!yumm.

A nod to Grandmother Powell.....

...for providing the Pudding recipe and for the excuse to pull out a vintage mixer.  Who doesn't love that?  I decided to use the Sunbeam Model 9 because when I was very young my Aunt had a Model 9 and she used to put me up on the counter and let me run the mixer and scrape the bowl.  I can remember her telling me "Don't get the spatula in the beaters!!!."  I guess it's a day for fond memories!!

I made the Banana Pudding recipe and it tasted really good when I was putting it together.  It's cooling now so we'll have it for desert tonight if it cools enough.  If not we'll have it tomorrow.

Thank you for sharing this recipe!!  Did we ever talk about an AW.ORG collection of family recipes?  Hey Robert there is an idea for a new website!!

I was thinking of asking for a food tab at the top... I'd even pay to have access to family recipes like the ones I've found here.

The one condition is we have to post pictures of the process and equipment to go with the recipe! :-)
