Has anyone rewired a waffle irons heating coils?

I saw there are kits for electric dryers to rewire the heating coils with new coils. So how about nichrome wire for the smaller appliances?

(I assume a smaller diameter to keeps watts down for the shorter length wire.)

I have an antique from the 30s that burned out it's nichrome wire in one spot.

It seems that some have repaired nichrome wire in dryer heaters and other such elements. they will twist the wires together to remake a good physical/electrical connection, then apply borax, then apply current to heat up and it somehow makes a weld.

Another way is to get a carbon rod, connect to 1 side of power supply don't need lots of voltage for this only current) and touch twisted pair of wires to carbon, making a ball of welded metal there.

Has anyone done this, or know of a source for new nichrome wire?

I think you can still get the wire/coil material. When I was thinking I'd have to re-wire the deep well coil on my mom's '49 Westy I'm pretty sure I was advised that this stuff could still be purchased. But then I got the above advice that twisting the broken ends together would work--if they wouldn't be seeing a whole lot of use--so that's what I did. Never heard of the Borax thing but might try that if the coil fails again before I unload the stove.
