Maytagbear/Bosco

It's sold here at Kroger.

Maytagbear: if you want Bosco...I'll send you some!!! I can drink the stuff stright from the bottle.

Quisp...loved the stuff!!! the little marshion with the propeller on his head and the space ship shaped cerial...life did'nt get any better.

"I love Bosco...Bosco is for me..."

Just saw Bosco chocolate syrup (not "milk amplifier" as it used to be known) in a Shop 'N Save supermarket (stocked by Supervalu Stores) in Granite City, IL...

BTW, Quisp is still available through the Quaker Oats website...I have a nephew who is in his 40's who was about six or seven when Quisp was first introduced...he didn't turn into a punker, but he's into costuming (as in medieval costumes, Star Trek, space outfits, etc...these days, somethin' like that's "quazy" like a fox...

OH GOSH; Are we ALL from the same era?

OK OK OK, someday I've GOT to attend one of your festivals. BOOMER I AM.
I MISS "PDQ", the instant chocolate drink. Looked much like rough ground coffee. I remember the last time I bought it - at John and Ann's corner store in Chicago. (Both dead, don'cha know).
They had a GE fan behind the counter (oh gosh, even then I was into...)
As a kid, I saved the PDQ bottle caps (of old cars I think) and had a wall hanging.
I REALLY MISS SALVO. I did buy the WISK tablets continuously when they were available. They were PERFECT for visiting the laundromat to do my "soiled" comforters. Throw them in and wash away your troubles...
Detergent tablets are so convenient, and so TRANSIENT!!

I remember when Star Trek came on TV and the Appolo or Gemini astronouts were going into space, we had SPACE FOOD STIKS, as a snack. They were this push up sort of foil rapt turd looking thing that made us feel we were eating astronaut food. We would rinse them down with Jiffy straws with milk, they had the chocolate right in the straws, or strawberry!

"I love Bosco
It's rich and chocolaty.
Chocolate flavored Bosco
Is mighty good for me!
Mama puts it in my milk
For extra energy.
Bosco gives me iron
And sunshine vitamin D.
Oh, I love Bosco,
That's the drink for me!"

Used to love the jar with the pump on top.

I live just outside of the quaint town of Los Gatos, which has a very touristy shopping district, old buildings, low speed limits, unique shops, you get the idea. Partner and I went to see "The Queen" at the theater there this week (excellent film btw) and checked out a new candy store up the street first. This place had tons of stuff we hadn't seen in years. Things like Mountain Bars, Ghirardelli's Flicks, Fizzies, tons of taffy although I didn't see Turkish it was probably there. Also a lot of "penny" candy from my childhood. This stuff is definitely available out there but it appears you have to go to a specialty shop to find it. Same goes for old brands of soda. They are still out there but tough to find. I've seen a couple of articles about a place on York Blvd. in LA that sells all types of old soda. I need to check it out next time I visit my sister there as it's not far from her.

Thanks Peter!

I'm going to order those Chocolate Babies! I used to buy them in a box at the movie theater! They were great; not chewy like Sugar Babies! My next quest is for Turkish Delight and the elusive SevenUp candy bar!

More on Bosco and Salvo

Petek, this is the version I grew up with...

I hate Bosco,
Bosco's not for me,
Mommy put it in my milk
To try and poison me--

I fixed Mommy
I put it in her tea
Now I have no Mommy
To try and poison me!

Paulg, you must be one of the few people who ever bought Salvo. Critics said Salvo "looked like a hockey puck and performed like one in the washing machine." In fact, the product had to be reformulated because some people actually thought the tablets could be used in more than one washload...but griped because their clothes weren't coming out clean!

You may also remember Lever Brothers had a version called Vim, which came out after Salvo (I think about 1962) and was withdrawn somewhere in the late '60s. Salvo came out in 1960 and withdrawn in 1978.

BTW, in late 2005, Big Lots stores in St. Louis received shipments of a Salvo dishwashing liquid that was made in Mexico. It came in a green plastic bottle that looked like the old Joy bottle and smelled something like the non-ultra Lemon Fresh Joy formula ("Salvo me Salva!" ["Salvo saves me!"]) read the label.
