This dryer is very cool to me, for 2 particular reasons;
1. The door has a window!!
2. This dryer has speeds! How cool is that!?!?

Christina, it's the second from the TOL model the Imperial Mark XII, not many differences between both models, the Mark XII had a bigger lint filter door and probably a sprinkler.

I have a similar one that's probably a year older (these are from 1964). Same controls but single speed and no glass in it's door... Canadian models made by Inglis for RCA Victor.

A new pair of machines!

I just got something else today! They're currently in my friend's truck so I don't have pictures but here's the tag from the washer. Maybe some Whirlpool experts will help me identify and date them!

Two speeds in this case does not refer to two tumble speeds. Gentle speed cuts the heat input (lower element wattage or lower gas burner output) and reduces airflow (via a dual pulley on the blower). Super speed is full heat input and airflow rate ike all other Whirlpool dryers of the time.

And this is still the older, inefficient drum with the perforated back that let a good amount of heated air bypass the tumbling load and be sucked right out the exhaust port since the air entered and exited behind the perforated rear of the drum. This was the reason that Sears offered the 37,000 BTU burners and the 50 amp approximately 8000 watt heaters in their more deluxe dryers because it was the only way to compensate for their dryer design's inefficiency other than the drum wrapped in insulation held in place with bailing wire and the additional fan in front of the heater box in some earlier waterfall front models.

Thank you for explain what the 2-speed action is on this whirlpool design. Definitely not the kind of 2-speed I was imagining. Is there a 2-speed dryer that is a 2-speed for slower & normal tumbling action?

You can use the windowed door on later models with the more efficient drum design as long as they have the same door size. WP made special models for the gas companies that continued to have windowed doors even as the rest of the dryer changed. The windowed door even fits the 24" porta dryer.

Christina, there were a few Whirlpool dryer models in the 1970s that had multiple tumble speeds, done by way of shifting the drum belt on a conical/tapered motor pulley.

Three speeds were offered initally (low for lightweight delicates, regular for typical loads, high for large/bulky items). These were the LAA series in 1974-1975. As I recall, both the top-of-line and 2nd-down had tumble speed selection.

Then it was changed to two speeds (Normal and Special/high) on the LDA series (1976-77), on only the top-of-line model, which is pictured below.

The LAA 3-speed had three positions (normal was in the middle).

1976-77 was the last time Whirlpool offered multiple tumble speeds.

Nice dryer, Dadoes! "Imperial Mark 18"? The names are more reminiscent of the car models offered in the 70's. Interesting. Anyways, that's a nice looking panel and I have never found one of these..yet.

That's cool that the windowed door can fit on the 24" Porta-dryer. I didn't even know that whirlpool made a compact/portable dryer. But I guess it would make sense, to have a dryer for their portable/compact washer. Right?

Thank you for that detailed information on the different speeds whirlpool offered on their dryers. I do understand the idea of a slower speed for smaller items being dried in the dryer, so that they don't get sucked up against the drum instead of being tumbled.
But I don't understand the idea of faster tumbling for the larger items like covers or sheets?? If the drum is tumbling faster with the larger items, wouldn't the faster speed suck the items up against the sides of the drum instead of tumbling them??

With large items like sheets, the faster speed kept them from balling or rolling up by holding them closer to the side of the drum. WP dryers are not good about drying sheets. One king-size sheet at a time is all I have ever seen dry successfully in a regular speed WP dryer and that is best done with a full lint screen to keep the air flow somewhat moderated because if you have a WP dryer with a window, you can see how when the sheet starts to lose some of its moisture it begins to be sucked against the exhaust grill at the back of the drum from time to time. This eventually causes it to start forming a ball and then you are screwed. The timer has to be set for the barest minimum dry time because once the sheet is dry, it starts to roll up. Two sheets in there at the same time just make trouble faster. Sometimes the fitted bottom envelopes the top sheet and other times vice versa. I never had trouble drying both sheets and the pillow cases in either the Kenmore combo or the DE806. I guess they could not move around enough in the smaller drums to get into trouble.

For the explanation of the faster tumbling speed for larger bulky items. Now that I think about it, when I dry my sheets in my moms newer whirlpool dryer, they do end up "balling up". I have to open the dryer door, pull the sheets out and redistribute them back into the dryer 2 or 3 times during the drying cycle, to make sure the sheets don't stay balled up & damp in the center of this ball of sheets.

One more question;
Since you say you don't get the "balled-up" effect in your DE806, do you think my sheets wouldn't ball-up in my DE808 either??

Ida Know. It depends on the size, fabric and many other factors, but I wish you the best. As soon as it gets cold, I am going to have to try drying the sheets in the 806 again.

Whirlpool multi-speed dryer

The Wp dryer pictured in #8 is mine, I have the matching washer. They came from Kevin As soon as my new laundry room is done I will be posting pictures of both, I had planned on them being up and running before now, seems like there is always something else I Need to take care of, one was getting rid of my New Kenmore dishwasher ( I GAVE it to my neighbors ) and getting an older Kitchen Aid, 20 minutes washed, another 20 or 30 minutes to dry and done, Kenmore 1.5 hr wash 30 or so minutes attempting to dry, door left open over night to finish drying and dishes on top rack still not clean... My Kitchen Aid is GREAT, Like the sound of the 1/2 pump when it's filled and washing, reminds me of being in the back cabin of a jet. Pictures of the LDA/LDI-9800 in action will be coming soon I hope, been telling my self that for a year...
