Reverse tumble dryer

In the USA is there a home front load washer and dryer that has a dryer that reverse tumbles like the washer does? I know that some time back, White Westinghouse made a few Frigidaire dryers that did, but they only reverse tumbled very briefly and mostly rotated in the same direction. If there is a set that could be bought in the USA that truly reverse tumbles I would be interested.

The only dryers I know that do 50-50 tumbling are commercial units. And some odd out ones here in the EU.

Reason ist that most dryers drive the blower and the drum via 1 motor together. Thus, reversing the motor causes a reduced airflow, which slows drying, and needs the heater to reduce output or to stop all together.

Machines like Mieles OctoPlus models and I even think their Little Giants have 2 seperate motors, so reversing is a none issue. They copied this design on the first generations of their home heatpump dryers here in the EU, but they still used their sensing algorythm to trigger the 30 second reversing period.

Today, the dryers that reversed the most were the AEG heatpump dryers. They had a bedding cycle the reverses every 90 seconds for a few rotations, and suposedly really works well. Dunno if their new lineup still does that.

Yes, I know that it would mean they would have two motors. One to tumble the clothes and the other for the blower. That is probably why nobody has done that for the most part. I just thought that maybe someone might have one. It would save time with sheets and such rolling into a ball. With commercial machines it isn't an issue because they already have separate motors for that.

As Henrik said above, the (electric) heating elements would either switch off entirely or just one would switch off during the reverse tumble on European dryers that pretty much all only had one motor in the past.

The F&P dryers now available on AjMadison lack the reverse tumble, unfortunately. The older Electrolux models also reversed, but only during the cool down.

My AEG OKO-Lavatherm Condenser Dryer

Has reverse tumbling. Interestingly however if you choose "Quick" drying it does not reverse until the cool down period when things (presumably) are dry. Well dry as anything can be coming out of a condenser dryer. *LOL*

Think there are a few other settings where dryer won't reverse as well. Barely use the thing so cannot say..

I have a Wave Touch that has that option on many cycles, especially nice on bedding loads.

As have often said, it wasn't my idea; but the thing came part of set (Lavamat and Lavatherm). If one had one's way would have waited for something more interesting like the Miele (French) vented dryer that was basically being given away one foolishly let slip by.

Don't do heavy/thick things in the Lavatherm, they go into the Whirlpool compact or round the corner to dryers are laundryette. But for other things drying time isn't *that* much longer than the WP, and you get the wonderful condenser dryer scent.

Reverse Tumbling Full Size Dryers

There is really no need for it, Yes GE-LG sell full sized dryers with two motors that reverse, but there is no assurance that reversing periodically will give you a dry load that is not balled up, even many little European size dryers ball up and badly tangle many loads of clothing.

My Fisher & Paykel . . .

. . . reverses. I have never had anything to ball up while drying. It might take a couple minutes longer to do a load because the heat (gas) does not come on during the reverse tumble.

Balling

Greatly depends on the algorythm behind it.

Our Bauknecht does reversing periods of 3-6 minutes during which the drum turns in a 6sec left, 3 sec stop, 6sec right, 3 sec stop pattern. It helps, but it does it way to seldomly and only after a certain temp is reached.
Arcrelik only reverses for 1 rotation.
Hotpoint only reverses after a certain drying degree is reached.
Miele and Electrolux for that matter use a system that monitors motor current to detect a balling situation and then trigger a short reverse period.

It's not a guarantee, but it can help a lot.

The GE right height dryers have the detangle assist that reverses, the profile before that had the two motors, I miss that dryer.

The GE Harmony dryer had the duo-dry system which was two motors. I've got a customer wanting to upgrade her laundry, so I'm hoping to get her GE harmony dryer.

The Miele's reverse, but they have the one motor, air flow alternates back to front etc.

Which LG reverse tumbles? Ideally, I'd like a dryer that reverse tumbles (dual motor) and has a true steam generator. I doubt such an animal exists lol.
