Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Reunited

Some of you may recall that, back in 2005, my very first vintage washer (obtained weeks after finding this site) was a 1978 Frigidaire 1-18, model WC. Back then, there were places to find 1-18s, and I never thought twice about encountering any difficulty in locating another.

In 2007, I moved to San Francisco, and I gave my beloved 1-18 to a friend who needed a washer. Of all the washers I had, this one never needed a repair, nor gave me a lick of trouble.

Fast forward to now, and it's become incredibly difficult to nab these things. One of the places in Phoenix, which used to have a room full of the things, liquidated; I've only seen two on Craigslist since. I began to feel the patented "Apex Wash-a-Matic" remorse--the feeling of "Aw, crap, this was rarer than I'd thought."

Here, David stands next to My Precious as I fall victim to irrational exuberance. :-)[this post was last edited: 10/30/2014-00:40]

What's to do?

Hook it up, of course! And get some laundry! Good thing I'd just pulled a set of sheets of the bed, and Kevin contributed some clothes too. All of that put together, and we only had a 2/3rd load. Damn, these things hold a lot of laundry!

It was hot out, regrettably--when Kevin asked about a good visit time, I'd suggested October. Naturally, this would be the weekend it hovered in the nineties, as evidenced by my ability to schvitz through my shirt, and then some.[this post was last edited: 10/30/2014-01:12]

Better than cable television

Here, Roger, David, Kevin and I hover over the machine, and I improvise a drain hose from a dishwasher corrugated line. (1-18s, for whatever reason, have teeny drain hoses. Teeny. As in, your ring clamp won't make this happen.)

A few minor corrections later, and we're good to go.

Note the bottle of Suavitel in the background, causing Roger to keep his distance. Suavitel, folks. BECAUSE IT SMELLS BETTER THAN DOWNY.

It's time

...to do some laundry!

We practiced the ancient art of slightly under-filling the machine with water, to promote effective turnover.

This was David's first encounter with a Jet-Cone pulsator Frigidaire, and he was exceedingly impressed.

(He's been lusting for a Philco with Hulatator™, so this satisfies his rampant desire for unconventional agitation.)

Pulsator travel

As I recall, the 1-18 was the only later-generation pulsator machine to return to the Unimatic's full length of pulsation travel. It's very lively, that's for sure.

Exciting stuff!

I'm so very grateful to Kevin for an incredible, wonderful, thoughtful housewarming gift!! This was truly unexpected, and I'm beyond thrilled. And in case you're wondering, this will be buried with me, along with my Norelco Dial-a-Meal, when I die. There shall be no getting rid of these. So, get an excavator to dig the hole. :-)

This means we now have the 1-18, Westinghouse slant-front, Maytag, Wards/Westinghouse top loader, Maytag wringer, and Easy Spin-Drier.

My plan to keep the appliances under control is progressing normally. :-)

(BUT I AM STILL USING THE SAME DISHWASHER, GORDON!!)

And then...

That's not all! We then segued into an amazing dinner and a real treat for dessert, both delectable temptations that Kevin had suggested. More on those in a separate thread--and a photo-documented recipe that was worth the wait in one instance...and hardly required any waiting in the other!

Nate. It looks like you guys had a great time. I wish I could have come down. I'm glad I got to see Kevin for a bit and his stay with us was great as well. I unfortuneatly had to work on Sunday(someone has to keep those inmates at bay). I am looking forward to coming down for a visit and play with the "new" 1-18.
