I have a Maytag 300 Quiet Series Tall Tub, and it has a Rinse Hold cycle. My machine is two years old now, so there could have been changes done. I rarely, if ever use RH. I would say in the last two years I have used it maybe three or four times.

Rinse and Mold Button/Option

I'd be lost without it, and did not buy a Jenn-Air brand DW due to the lack of such feature. No biggie when one has a dial/timer to turn. Not as workable when the controls are electronic.

I have found that I need to leave the DW door open after a R&H is run to let all dry, or there will still be a smell.

Rinse Hold works as a plate warmer, for models without that specific function (like ours). It's the only time we ever use it.

Maybe in the old days before they put enzymes in the detergents it made a difference, however, I regularly go a week before I fill the machine up and I don't have a problem with dried-on foods.

I do remember using the Rinse & Mold cycle years ago. I guess I thought it must do something.

I use the Rinse & Hold feature when the mixing bowls are really dirty (like when mixing something with mayonnaise), cake batter, etc. and there are several items that if left would make the dishwasher smell without pre-rinsing first (I never pre-rinse).

Our Maytag Quiet Series 300 (purchased last November) has a "Rinse Only" feature. We don't use it as we run the dishwasher every night.
I think what probably happened is that Maytag just relabeled the Rinse & Hold button to Rinse Only to more accurately describe what the cycle does.

Fly Away

House flies, fruit flies and gnats are robust in the fall. I use rinse and hold to hold down the flies.

Maytag

I saw these series and these new models are very simular to the whirlpool design. Their are some differences like the spray arms and a few other things. The next model up had the rinse and hold cycle.

I think I've used rinse and hold maybe a half dozen times in the last 20 years....never something I got into the habit of doing.

We used it fairly often on the KDI-17a back in the day. As I recall from that time, it caused more odor than it prevented. I rarely used it on my KUDS22, and never on my DD603 except for demoing the DD.

tangent to Kellys post above

Fruit flies you're supposed to be able to control with a saucer of cider vinegar with some dish soap added.. I haven't tried it yet,, just waiting for the next batch of them to show up.

back to our regular programming

Clean/Green Rinse and Hold

I use the Rinse and Hold cycle a lot only I do it this way:
I add the normal amount of detergent to the second cup and run the cycle, only I stop it long before it drains and continue to add dishes until I have a full load. Every time I add some stuff I reactivate the machine for 30 seconds or so. Keeps down the smells and helps "pre-soak" the load. When I'm ready to wash, I refill the detergent dispenser, set it to the middle of the first rinse or prewash and let it rip.

Great Tip

That's a great idea, Pete. Any idea how I would attach the saucer to my underwear? Fruit flies on a date can be a turn off.

Never rinse and hold here, I find it just makes the dishwasher smell and leaves the interior gross by smearing all the gunk around the racks and cabinet.

Most we'd normally go is 2-3 days without running it through, we only scrape dont rinse and have never had an issue with things coming clean.

This includes crusty fry pans, egg on plates, starch coated saucepans etc.

Its not a cycle I see the point of.

Now taint that funny!

Cider vinegar? Add a little water and I'll tell you where it most effectively inserted.

(ducks and runs!)
